Friends Of Handicraft
The Friends of Handicraft ( sv, Handarbetets vänner) is a Swedish association for the education, development, production and experimentation of advanced textiles and design. History The association was founded in 1874 by Sophie Adlersparre. From the outset, the association had the double aims of promoting the development of the quality of Swedish textile handicraft as well as to provide women with a source of independent income. The association also still has the pedagogical aim to provide education in textile creation and design. In the 1880s, the association designed reform dress for the Swedish Dress Reform Association. At the turn of the 19th – 20th century, Carin Wästberg, Maja Sjöström, and were responsible for the artistic production of the association. Somewhat later, Anna Boberg, Carl Larsson and Anders Zorn were tied to the Friends of Handicraft, making designs for tapestries woven by the association. Sophie Adlersparre
Carin ''Sophie'' Adlersparre, known under the pen-name Esselde (born Leijonhufvud; 6 July 1823 – 27 June 1895) was one of the pioneers of the 19th-century women's rights movement in Sweden. She was the founder and editor of the first women's magazine in Scandinavia, ''Home Review'' (''Tidskrift för hemmet''), in 1859–1885; co-founder of Friends of Handicraft (''Handarbetets vänner'') in 1874–1887; founder of the Fredrika Bremer Association (''Fredrika-Bremer-förbundet'') in 1884; and one of the first two women to be a member of a state committee in Sweden in 1885. Life Sophie Adlersparre, born into the Leijonhufvud, Leijonhufvud family, was the daughter of lieutenant colonel Baron Erik Gabriel Knutsson Leijonhufvud and Sofie Emerentia Hoppenstedt. Friends Of Finnish Handicraft
The Friends of Finnish Handicraft ( fi, Suomen käsityön ystävät, sv, Finska handarbetets vänner) is a Finnish association for the promotion and creation of textile art. History and activity The association was founded in 1879 by Fanny Churberg and inspired by the Swedish Friends of Handicraft association which was founded five years earlier. The association has always worked closely with artists and architects and from an early date cooperated with e.g. Jac Ahrenberg. The purpose of the Friends of Finnish Handicraft is to document and promote typically Finnish textiles. In its early days the association collected and published a pattern book of traditional textile patterns. Djurgården ( or ) or, more officially, ''Kungliga Djurgården'' (), is an island in central Stockholm, Sweden. An art gallery is a room or a building in which visual art is displayed. Stockholm City Hall ( sv, Stockholms stadshus, ''Stadshuset'' locally) is the seat of Stockholm Municipality in Stockholm, Sweden. Lennart Rodhe
Lennart Rodhe (November 15, 1916 – January 17, 2005) was a Sweden, Swedish artist, painter and printmaker. Lennart Rodhe enrolled as a student in 1934 at Edward Berggrens studio at Konstfack, Tekniska skolan in Stockholm, and studied under Peter Rostrup-Boyesen i Copenhagen and at the Royal University College of Fine Arts in Stockholm 1938–44 with Sven X:et Erixon as teacher. He also studied anatomy at Det Kongelige Danske Kunstakademi, Kunstakademiet i Köpenhamn. Lennart Rodhe is considered one of the most prominent of the Swedish modernists, notable as a professor at Royal University College of Fine Arts in Stockholm, as someone who strongly influenced his students, such as Peter Dahl (artist), Peter Dahl and Olle Bauman, although his strict methods of education based on the study of model drawing scared off some students. Siri Derkert
Siri Karin Derkert (30August 188828April 1973) was a Swedish artist and sculptor. She was also a strong advocate for peace, feminism and environmental issues. Life and education Derkert was born on 30August 1888 in the parish of Adolf Fredrik Church in Stockholm. She was one of seven children of merchant Carl Edward Johansson Derkert and Emma Charlotta Valborg, born Fogelin. She received her first artistic education at the Caleb Althin school of art in Stockholm, where she started in 1904. She went on to the Royal Institute of Art in 1911–13. In 1913, Derkert moved to Paris where she studied at the Académie Colarossi and the Académie de la Grande Chaumière together with Swedish sculptors Ninnan Santesson and Lisa Bergstrand, until the start of World War I in the autumn of 1914. Kaisa Melanton
Kaisa Brita Melanton née Björklund (1920–2012) was a pioneering Swedish textile artist who is remembered in particular for the large, post-modernist works she created for local authorities, theatres and churches. She employed a variety of techniques including embroidery and weaving. From 1969 to 1979, she served as head of the textile department at Konstfack, the Swedish University of Arts, Crafts and Design, and in 1974 was elected a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts.
