The Friedrichshafen N.I was a German prototype night bomber built by Friedrichshafen during World War I. Design and development The Friedrichshafen N.I was a two-seat biplane equipped with a Mercedes D.IVa The Mercedes D.IVa was a German six-cylinder, water-cooled, inline engine developed in 1917 for use in aircraft and built by ''Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft'' (DMG).Gunston 1989, p.101. Design and development The D.IVa replaced the failed Merc ... engine, double-mainwheel tri-cycle landing gear and large relatively highly swept biplane wings. It flew in 1917, but flight testing revealed a number of deficiencies, the main one of which was the large length of the nose, which made it difficult for the pilot to get a look at landing, especially at night. A prototype is an early sample, model, or release of a product built to test a concept or process. Night Bomber
A night bomber is a bomber aircraft intended specifically for carrying out bombing missions at night. The term is now mostly of historical significance. Night bombing began in World War I and was widespread during World War II. A number of modern aircraft types are designed primarily for nighttime bombing, but air forces no longer refer to them as night bombers. More common terms today include interdictor and strike fighter, and such aircraft tend to have all-weather, day-or-night capabilities. Friedrichshafen ( or ; Low Alemannic: ''Hafe'' or ''Fridrichshafe'') is a city on the northern shoreline of Lake Constance (the ''Bodensee'') in Southern Germany, near the borders of both Switzerland and Austria. It is the district capital (''Kreisstadt'') of the Bodensee district in the federal state of Baden-Württemberg. Friedrichshafen has a population of about 58,000.
