Friedrich August Von Kaulbach
Friedrich August von Kaulbach (2 June 1850 in Munich – 26 July 1920 in Ohlstadt, Germany) was a German portraitist and historical painter. Biography He was born to a family that included several well known artists and began his studies with his father, Friedrich Kaulbach. He then attended the Academy of Fine Arts, Nuremberg, where he studied with August von Kreling and Karl Raupp. He transferred to the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich, in 1871 and worked with Wilhelm von Diez. In 1883, he became a teacher there himself. Along with Franz von Lenbach and Franz von Stuck, he was known as one of the "Malerfürsten" (painter princes) and was one of the highest paid portrait painters in Germany. His works were commissioned by the uppermost social circles there and in America. His painting, "Children's Carnival" (the five children of mathematician Alfred Pringsheim), shows Katia Pringsheim (far left), who would later marry the writer, Thomas Mann. Frank Eugene
Frank Eugene (19 September 1865 – 16 December 1936) was an American-born photographer who was a founding member of the Photo-Secession and one of the first university-level professors of photography in the world. Early life Eugene was born in New York City as Frank Eugene Smith. His father was Frederick Smith, a German baker who changed his last name from Schmid after moving to America in the late 1850s. His mother was Hermine Selinger Smith, a singer who performed in local German beer halls and theaters. About 1880, Eugene began to photograph for amusement, possibly while he was attending the City College of New York. In 1886, he moved to Munich in order to attend the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts, where he studied drawing and stage design. Carmen
''Carmen'' () is an opera in four acts by the French composer Georges Bizet. The libretto was written by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy, based on the Carmen (novella), novella of the same title by Prosper Mérimée. The opera was first performed by the Opéra-Comique in Paris on 3 March 1875, where its breaking of conventions shocked and scandalised its first audiences. Bizet died suddenly after the 33rd performance, unaware that the work would achieve international acclaim within the following ten years. ''Carmen'' has since become one of the most popular and frequently performed operas in the classical Western canon, canon; the "Habanera (aria), Habanera" from act 1 and the "Toreador Song" from act 2 are among the best known of all operatic arias. Rosario Guerrero
Rosario Fernández Guerrero (born about 1880 – died 1960s) was a Spanish dancer and pantomimist with an international career. Although she was not a singer, she is most often associated with the role of Carmen. Early life Guerrero was born in Spain; some sources give Madrid as the city, while she recalled a childhood in Seville. Career Guerrero danced in Paris and London as a young woman. She danced a ballet version of ''Carmen'' in 1903 in London at the Alhambra Theatre. "I reveled in it," she told an interviewer, "I felt that I ''was'' Carmen, and do you know, I verily believe that my Don José was now and again really afraid of me." Hanna Ralph (born Johanna Antonia Adelheid Günther; 25 September 1888 – 25 March 1978) was a German stage and film actress whose career began on the stage and in silent film in the 1910s and continued through the early 1950s. Career Hanna Ralph was born in Bad Kissingen, Germany, she made her stage debut in 1913 at the Schauspielhaus in Frankfurt. From 1914 to 1915 she was encaged at the at Staatstheater Mainz and in 1916 at the City Theater in Hamburg. In 1917 she began working on various stages in Berlin. Alice Geraldine Farrar (February 28, 1882 – March 11, 1967) was an American lyric soprano who could also sing dramatic roles. She was noted for her beauty, acting ability, and "the intimate timbre of her voice." She had a large following among young women, who were nicknamed "Gerry-flappers". Wilhelm Anton Kaulbach (8 August 1864, Hanover - 23 April 1934, Berlin) was a German portrait painter. Biography He was born to the painter, Friedrich Kaulbach, and his third wife, Marie, née Wellhausen. His sister, , and his half-brothers, Friedrich August and Sigmund (1854–1894) were also painters. He became deaf while still a small child, and attended a special deaf-mute school in Hildesheim. He was there for nine years, living with foster parents. His first lessons in art came from his father. In 1882, Friedrich August brought him to Munich, where he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts. In 1883, he joined a group for the hearing impaired, the "Monachia Gruß".
