Freopedia
Freopedia began as a project to install QRpedia codes at sites around Fremantle, Western Australia to link people to articles on Wikipedia. It has since evolved into a WikiTown project aiming to build comprehensive coverage of Fremantle on Wikipedia. The original idea came from Monmouth's Monmouthpedia. Fremantle is the first city in Australia to have such a project, and thus a virtual tour of its historic sites. Visitors to Fremantle are encouraged to take a walking tour with the help of a map produced by the City. The Freopedia Heritage Tour is one of several Fremantle walking tours and trails publicised by the City. The official launch took place at the W D Moore & Co Warehouse on 26 May 2013. The Fremantle Arts Centre and the Round House were included in the first set of sites. The creation of content on Wikipedia and the driving force of the project has come from the work of Wikipedian editors. Fremantle Walking Tours And Trails
The historic city of Fremantle, Western Australia has many walking tours and trails. A variety of books and pamphlets describe these trails. The walking through or around Fremantle is celebrated in at least one song, and also had involved competitions in 1893. The City of Fremantle has had "heritage events" which have included special tours and walks, as well as explorations of the city heritage. Fremantle heritage is not without its controversies and regular public debates have occurred over demolition of historic buildings and sites, as well as overall policy in relation to heritage of Fremantle. Fremantle Society
The Fremantle Society is a community-based culture and heritage advocacy group in Fremantle, Western Australia. It was formed in 1972 to prevent demolition of historic buildings in Fremantle and to assist in their development. As the significance of Fremantle's built heritage came to be more widely recognised and respected (by the City, and property owners), the focus of the Fremantle Society has evolved to include more of the cultural heritage of the area. Various projects over time have highlighted Fremantle heritage, as well as advocating consideration of heritage in planning schemes. When the City's precinct system was established in the 1990s to provide interaction between the City and groups of residents, the Society became the "umbrella" precinct of the other eleven precincts. QRpedia
QRpedia is a mobile Web-based system which uses QR codes to deliver Wikipedia articles to users, in their preferred language. A typical use is on museum labels, linking to Wikipedia articles about the exhibited object. QR codes can easily be generated to link directly to any Uniform Resource Identifier (URI), but the QRpedia system adds further functionality. It is owned and operated by a subsidiary of Wikimedia UK (WMUK). QRpedia was conceived by Roger Bamkin, a Wikipedia volunteer, coded by Terence Eden, and unveiled in April 2011. It is in use at museums and other institutions in countries including Australia, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Estonia, North Macedonia, Spain, India, the United Kingdom, Germany, Ukraine and the United States. The project's source code is freely reusable under the MIT License. Victoria Quay, Fremantle
Victoria Quay is a wharf on the south bank of the Swan River mouth in the Western Australian port city of Fremantle. It is separated from the Fremantle CBD by the railway line. Originally named South Quay, it was renamed Victoria Quay on 26 July 1901 in honour of the late Queen Victoria. With North Quay it forms the Inner Harbour area of Fremantle Harbour. Victoria Quay was added to the interim register of heritage places in 1999. Included within its boundaries are Fremantle Passenger Terminal, Challenger Institute of Technology. Toodyay (, nys, Duidgee), known as Newcastle between 1860 and 1910, is a town on the Avon River in the Wheatbelt region of Western Australia, north-east of Perth. The Heritage Council of Western Australia is the Government of Western Australia agency created to identify, conserve and promote places of cultural heritage significance in the state.
