French Frigate Minerve (1794)
''Minerve'' was a 40-gun of the French Navy. The British captured her twice and the French recaptured her once. She therefore served under four names before being broken up in 1814: * ''Minerve'', 1794–1795 * HMS ''Minerve'', 1795–1803 * ''Canonnière'', 1803–1810 * HMS ''Confiance'', 1810–1814 French service as ''Minerve'' Her keel was laid in January 1792, and ''Minerve'' was launched in 1794. Striking the colors—meaning lowering the flag (the "colors") that signifies a ship's or garrison's allegiance—is a universally recognized indication of surrender, particularly for ships at sea. A brig is a type of sailing vessel defined by its rig: two masts which are both square rig, square-rigged. Brigs originated in the second half of the 18th century and were a common type of smaller merchant vessel or warship from then until the latter part of the 19th century. During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries the Royal Navy made use of a considerable number of hired armed vessels. John Lane (14 March 1854 – 2 February 1925) was a British publisher who co-founded The Bodley Head with Charles Elkin Mathews. Career Originally from Devon, where he was born into a farming family, Lane moved to London in his teens. While working as a clerk at the Railway Clearing House, he acquired knowledge as an autodidact. After entering the London book trade, in 1887 he became co-founder with Elkin Mathews of The Bodley Head which originally was a bookshop dealing in antiquarian books.
