Fremantle Arts Centre (organisation)
The Fremantle Arts Centre is a multi-arts organisation located in Fremantle, Western Australia. It is housed in a registered colonial-era historic building, the Museum and Arts Centre, that was originally constructed in the 1860s as a lunatic asylum and which later served as a women's home and a technical school. The Fremantle Arts Centre was established in 1973, and its founding director was Ian Templeman. It was not until 1978 that the organisation received its first operational funding from the state government. Following Templeman's resignation in 1990, June Moorhouse was appointed as Director, a position she remained in for six years. In 2005 Jim Cathcart was appointed as Director and remained in the role for 15 years. He was replaced by Anna Reece in 2020, until she resigned in 2023 to take up a role as Artistic Director at the Festival of Perth. Fremantle Press (formerly known as Fremantle Arts Centre Press) is an independent publisher in Western Australia. Fremantle Press was established by the Fremantle Arts Centre in 1976. It focuses on publishing Western Australian writers and writing. Museum And Arts Centre, Fremantle
The Fremantle Arts Centre is a multi-arts organisation based in a historic building complex on Ord Street in Fremantle, Western Australia. The heritage-listed building complex was built using convict labour between 1861 and 1868 and was used as a psychiatric hospital, initially called the Fremantle Lunatic Asylum, and later known as the Asylum for the Criminally Insane. Today it offers a program of exhibitions, residencies, art courses and live music. It is located opposite the Fremantle Leisure and Aquatic Centre, and is near John Curtin College of the Arts and Christian Brothers College. Ian Templeman
Ian Neil Templeman (10 October 1938 – 3 November 2015) was an Australian poet, artist and arts administrator. History Templeman was born in Kensington, a suburb of Perth, Western Australia, the only child of (Merle) Daphne Templeman, née Hutchison, and Ronald Strachan Templeman (born 23 March 1908) of 21 Arlington Avenue. South Perth, who married on 13 April 1931. He was an active member of the Young Australia League, taking an prominent part in their stage performances of the early 1950s. He was already an established painter and arts teacher when he began studying for an arts degree at the University of Western Australia, specialising in English literature and poetry. Perth Festival, named Perth International Arts Festival (PIAF) between 2000 and 2017, and sometimes referred to as the Festival of Perth, is Australia's longest-running cultural festival, held annually in Western Australia.
