Freideutsche Jugend
The Freideutsche Jugend was an umbrella organisation established in Wilhelmine Germany that set out to create an autonomous youth culture free of adult supervision. It was part of the broader German youth movement, emerging from the Wandervogel. Wilhelmine Germany
The Wilhelmine Period () comprises the period of German history between 1890 and 1918, embracing the reign of Kaiser Wilhelm II in the German Empire from the resignation of Chancellor Otto von Bismarck until the end of World War I and Wilhelm's abdication during the November Revolution. It affected the society, politics, culture, art and architecture of Germany and roughly coincided with the Belle Époque era of Western Europe. The German Youth Movement (german: Die deutsche Jugendbewegung) is a collective term for a cultural and educational movement that started in 1896. It consists of numerous associations of young people that focus on outdoor activities. The movement included German Scouting and the Wandervogel. Wandervogel
''Wandervogel'' (plural: ''Wandervögel''; English: "Wandering Bird") is the name adopted by a popular movement of German youth groups from 1896 to 1933, who protested against industrialization by going to hike in the country and commune with nature in the woods. Drawing influence from medieval wandering scholars, their ethos was to revive old Teutonic values, with a strong emphasis on German nationalism. According to historians, a major contribution of the ''Wandervögel'' was the revival of folk songs in wider German society. The movement was divided into three main national groups: the ''Alt-Wandervogel'', the ''Wandervogel eingetragener Verein'' (WVEV) and the ''Jung-Wandervogel''. Gustav Wyneken
Gustav Wyneken (1875–1964) was a German pedagogue and founder of the Wickersdorf Free School Community. He was also a leader in the German Youth Movement and briefly contributed to school policy during the German revolutionary period after World War I. He failed to regain support for his school reform ideas after his conviction as a pederast. Life and career Gustav Wyneken was born April 19, 1875, in Stade, northern Germany. After passing his teachers' exam, he became a teacher at Hermann Lietz's progressive school in rural Ilsenburg, central Germany. Wyneken became its director in 1901 and eventually left due to differences with Lietz. In 1906, Wyneken founded the Wickersdorf Free School Community in Thuringia with Odenwaldschule founder Paul Geheeb and others.
