Freezer Queen
Freezer Queen was an American frozen food packaging company. It was a pioneer of the TV dinner industry beginning in 1958. For many years, it was an important employer in Buffalo, New York. It was founded by Buffalo businessmen Paul Snyder and Charles R. Spalla, and at one point had over 1,000 employees. In 2004, its Buffalo plant failed a government safety inspection and was closed by Home Market Foods, its corporate parent. The company was previously owned by United Foods. The plant's closure left many employees unemployed. The USDA inspection found such violations as live cockroaches in the gravy tank on multiple occasions. In response, Freezer Queen first requested a new USDA inspector, then suggested that parts of the facility were debris-strewn and not normally cleaned, and finally elected to shut down the facility rather than fix the unsafe and unsanitary conditions. Freezing food preserves it from the time it is prepared to the time it is eaten. Since early times, farmers, fishermen, and trappers have preserved grains and produce in unheated buildings during the winter season. Paul Snyder (basketball)
Paul Lewis Snyder, Sr. (born c. 1938) is a Buffalo, New York businessman and former owner of the Buffalo Braves basketball team. Snyder was born and raised in Mansfield, Pennsylvania, and first attended Alfred University before transferring to the University at Buffalo. He was on the football and wrestling teams in college. He founded the Freezer Queen frozen food company in Buffalo in 1958 and founded the Darien Lake theme park after purchasing of land in Genesee County, New York, in 1964, owning the resort and slowly developing it into a major amusement park until he sold the resort in 1983. He also briefly operated a (now demolished) Industrial Park located on the southeastern grounds of the Buffalo Niagara International Airport in the late 1980s. Queen City Landing
Queen City Landing was an approved residential tower proposal by developer Gerald Buchheit on the Outer Harbor of Buffalo, New York. Preparation work included the demolition of a 6-story warehouse formerly operated by Freezer Queen Foods and the project was planned to have approximately 200 apartment units. Upon completion, it would have been the 6th-tallest building in Buffalo and the 13th-tallest in Upstate New York, with a height of 324 feet and 23 floors. The tower was targeted in a lawsuit by local environmentalists out of concern that it posed a danger to bird migration, given its immediate proximity to the Tifft Nature Preserve, and also that the city board did not conduct a full environmental study on the site.
