Freedom Square, Yerevan
__NOTOC__ The Freedom Square or Liberty Square ( hy, Ազատության հրապարակ, ), also known as Opera Square and Theatre Square (Թատերական հրապարակ, ''T'aterakan hraparak'') until 1991, is a town square located in Kentron (Center) district of Yerevan, Armenia. The square is part of the Yerevan Opera Theater complex, located just to the south of the main opera building, between the opera park and the Swan lake. Along with the Republic Square, the Freedom Square is one of the two main squares in central Yerevan. It is bordered with four streets: Tumanyan Street, Teryan Street, Sayat Nova Avenue and Mashtots Avenue. The statues of writer Hovhannes Tumanyan and composer Alexander Spendiaryan are located in the square. Armenpress (Armenian Press; hy, Արմենպրես) is the oldest and the main state news agency in Armenia. History and profile Armenpress was founded on 18 December 1918 by the government of the First Republic of Armenia as the Armenian Telegraph Agency (Հայաստանի հեռագրական գործակալություն). Simon Vratsian played a major role in the establishment of the agency. ''Asbarez'' ( hy, Ասպարէզ "Arena") is an Armenian-American bilingual daily newspaper published in Armenian and English in Los Angeles, California, formerly by the Western USA Central Committee of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation. As of late 2020, the newspaper is no longer affiliated with the Armenian Revolutionary Federation. History The newspaper began publication in 1908 in Fresno, California. It moved to southern California several decades later when a large Armenian-American community emerged there. Before moving to a new headquarters in the Hollywood neighborhood of Los Angeles in the 1970s, the newspaper's headquarters was located in Glendale, California, a suburb of Los Angeles. Gagik Beglaryan ( hy, Գագիկ Բեգլարյան) (born January 1, 1964), also knowns as "Cherny" Gago, is an Armenian politician, former mayor of Yerevan. He was the Minister of Transport and Communications of Armenia from 2012 until 2016. On 4 March 2009, he was appointed acting mayor of Yerevan, pending the 31 May municipal elections. He was then appointed mayor on 8 June, after his party, the Republican Party of Armenia, won the election. On 8 December 2010 he resigned as mayor, having assaulted an official, following an incident at a Plácido Domingo concert. Armenian National Congress
The Armenian National Congress ( hy, italic=yes, Հայ Ազգային Կոնգրես, translit=Hay Azgayin Kongres) is an Armenian political party led by former president Levon Ter-Petrosyan and formed in 2008. Its direct predecessor was the Pan-Armenian National Movement. It is often abbreviated as ՀԱԿ or HAK, in keeping with its Armenian spelling, but it is occasionally referred to as the ANC in English-language media, including on its official website. From 2008 to 2013, it was a coalition of 13 opposition parties. 2008 Armenian Presidential Election Protests
A series of anti-government riots took place in Armenia following presidential elections held on 19 February 2008. Protests broke out in the Armenian capital Yerevan, organized by supporters of presidential candidate and former president Levon Ter-Petrosyan and other opposition leaders. The protests began on 20 February, lasted for 10 days in Yerevan's Freedom Square, and involved tens of thousands of demonstrators during the day and hundreds camping out overnight. A sit-in or sit-down is a form of direct action that involves one or more people occupying an area for a protest, often to promote political, social, or economic change. The protestors gather conspicuously in a space or building, refusing to move unless their demands are met. Levon Ter-Petrosyan
Levon Hakobi Ter-Petrosyan ( hy, Լևոն Հակոբի Տեր-Պետրոսյան; born 9 January 1945), also known by his initials LTP, is an Armenian politician who served as the first president of Armenia from 1991 until his resignation in 1998. A senior researcher at the Matenadaran, he led the Karabakh movement for the unification of the Armenian-populated Nagorno-Karabakh with Armenia which began in 1988. Armenian Presidential Election, 2008
Presidential elections were held in Armenia on 19 February 2008. Prime Minister Serzh Sargsyan was elected in the first round according to official results, but this was disputed by former President Levon Ter-Petrosyan, who was officially placed second. The candidacy of Sargsyan was backed by incumbent President of Armenia Robert Kocharyan, who was ineligible to stand for a third consecutive term. Other candidates included Vahan Hovhannisyan, the Vice President of the National Assembly, representing the Armenian Revolutionary Federation.
