Freedom (Erasure Song)
"Freedom" is a song by the British synthpop duo Erasure. It was the first single released from Erasure's ninth studio album, '' Loveboat''. The song was written by Vince Clarke and Andy Bell. "Freedom", as well as the entire ''Loveboat'' album, was produced by Flood, and this is the first Flood-produced Erasure single since " The Circus" in 1987. Mute Records released "Freedom" in the United Kingdom. It was not released in the United States due to problems with Erasure's then-record company Maverick (the ''Loveboat'' album did not have a US release until 2003). The song peaked at number 27 on the UK Singles Chart. In Germany, it appeared in the chart for one week at number eighty in Germany. In Sweden, it charted for one week, peaking at number 51. The song started life as a track called "Real Love". Although, the lyrics are in a quite early stage, there are a lot of resemblances to the final version. Erasure () is an English synth-pop duo formed in London in 1985, consisting of lead vocalist and songwriter Andy Bell with songwriter, producer and keyboardist Vince Clarke, previously known as co-founder of the band Depeche Mode and a member of synth-pop duo Yazoo. From their fourth single, " Sometimes" (1986), Erasure established themselves on the UK Singles Chart, becoming one of the most successful acts of the mid-1980s to the mid-1990s. From 1986 to 2007, the pair achieved 24 consecutive top-40 entries in the UK singles chart. Maverick was an American entertainment company founded in 1992 by Madonna, Frederick DeMann, and Veronica "Ronnie" Dashev, and formerly owned and operated by Warner Music Group. Steve Rodway (born in Cambridgeshire), also known under the alias Motiv 8 or Motiv8, is a British electronic dance music producer, songwriter, remixer and sound engineer. "The Circus" is a song by English synth-pop duo Erasure, released on 21 September 1987 as the band's seventh single overall. It is also the title track on their second studio album, '' The Circus'' (1987). Written by Erasure members Vince Clarke and Andy Bell, the song was a departure from the shiny pop of their six previous singles, creating a more down-tempo and melancholy mood. Essentially a synth-pop track, the music is accentuated by acoustic guitar and a continuous circus-like accordion. The lyrics touch on social issues, rare for the duo, and centre on the lament of "working men", whose bright futures and job securities are left shattered in the modern world of greedy corporations and technology. The song's distinctive and unusual sound is said to have been inspired by Bell hearing a record being played backwards. ''Loveboat'' is the ninth full-length studio album by English synth-pop duo Erasure. Released in the UK by Mute Records in 2000, it was produced by Erasure and Flood. It proved to be their least successful in terms of sales and charts since their debut '' Wonderland'' in 1986. Erasure's US record label at the time, Maverick Records, shelved the album because of "lack of hit singles". Largely panned by Erasure fans upon its release (and even by Andy Bell years after) because of its greater use of acoustic guitars, its lo-fi feel and heavy-handed bass sounds (many blame Flood's production work), the album did manage to get some positive reviews from music critics.
