Free Will Baptist Meetinghouse
The Garage at 219 Main Street in Farmington, Maine, was once a Free Will Baptist Meetinghouse. Built in 1835, it is one of a relatively small number of 19th-century brick meeting houses, and its history exhibits the creative reuse of structures in rural Maine. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. Description The church is a rectangular brick structure, set well back from Main Street, with a gable roof whose end faces the street. It exhibits modest Federal styling, with a pair of entry doors on the front facade, each with narrow sidelight windows and topped by a decorative fan. Above each door is a single sash window, with 12 over 8 lights. The gable pediment also has a decorative fan. There is a large doorway in the center of the southern facade, presently used as a garage door. The interior, although significantly altered from its original religious setting, includes the inscription "Glory to God in the Highest" on its plaster walls.NRHP n ... Farmington is a town in and the county seat of Franklin County, Maine, United States. As of the 2020 census, its population was 7,592. Farmington is home to the University of Maine at Farmington, Nordica Memorial Auditorium, the Nordica Homestead, and the annual Farmington Fair. History The area was once territory of the Canibas tribe of Abenaki Indians. They had two camps located near Farmington Falls, with fields cleared for cultivation of maize and potatoes. Their fort's stockade enclosed about an acre at the center of what is today Farmington Falls village. A group from Topsham arrived in 1776 to explore the area and lay out a town, called Plantation No. 1 or Sandy River Plantation, but permanent settlement was delayed by the Revolutionary War. The Farmington Historic District encompasses much of the main central business district of Farmington, Maine. Farmington was settled in the 1770s, and experienced its most rapid growth after being named the shire town ( county seat) of Franklin County in 1838, with a secondary spurt of redevelopment after a major fire in the 1880s. Free Will Baptist
Free Will Baptists are a group of General Baptist denominations of Christianity that teach free grace, free salvation and free will. The movement can be traced back to the 1600s with the development of General Baptism in England. Its formal establishment is widely linked to the English theologian, Thomas Helwys who led the Baptist movement to believe in general atonement. He was an advocate of religious liberty at a time when to hold to such views could be dangerous and punishable by death. He died in prison as a consequence of the religious persecution of Protestant dissenters under King James I. In 1702 Paul Palmer would go on to establish the movement in North Carolina and in 1727 formed the Free Will Baptist Church of Chowan. Many Calvinists became Free Will Baptists in the 19th century.
