Free Democrats (Italy)
The Free Democrats (, LD) were the centrism, centrist faction within the Democratic Party (Italy), Democratic Party (PD), a list of political parties in Italy, political party in Italy, around Francesco Rutelli, former leader of Democracy is Freedom – The Daisy, one of the two main parties that merged to form the PD in 2007. The faction was launched by Rutelli in June 2009 during a convention in Rome. The group comprised both liberalism, liberals and Christian democracy, Christian democrats who wanted the PD to be modelled on the example of the Democratic Party (United States), United States Democratic Party and consider social democracy as obsolete in the 21st century. Centrism is the range of political ideologies that exist between left-wing politics and right-wing politics on the left–right political spectrum. It is associated with moderate politics, including people who strongly support moderate policies and people who are not strongly aligned with left-wing or right-wing policies. Centrism is commonly associated with liberalism, radical centrism, and agrarianism.
