Kinshasa (; ; ln, Kinsásá), formerly Léopoldville ( nl, Leopoldstad), is the capital and largest city of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. List Of Air Carriers Banned In The European Union
The European Union (EU) publishes a list of air carriers that are banned from entering the airspace of any of its member states, usually for failing to meet EU regulatory oversight standards. The first version of the list was published in 2006, on the legal basis of Regulation No. 474/2006 of the European Commission, issued on 22 March of that year. The current version of the list was published on 23 November 2022. Legal procedure The process by which an air carrier is listed is laid out in Regulation (EC) No 2111/2005 of the European Parliament and Council. It involves consultation among the regulatory agencies of the member states, the institutions of the European Community, the authorities with responsibility for regulatory oversight of the air carrier concerned, and the air carrier itself. 2007 Free Airlines Let-410 Crash
On June 21, 2007, an overloaded Free Airlines Let L-410UVP (registration 9Q-CEU) in Karibu Airways livery crashed shortly after takeoff from Kamina Town (fr:''Kamina Ville'') for Lubumbashi, Democratic Republic of Congo. Landing in a swamp east of the unpaved strip, the aircraft came to rest inverted in the water. Background Free Airlines and Karibu Airways (also cited as the operator) were both on the List of air carriers banned in the EU. That list now bans "All air carriers certified by the authorities with responsibility for regulatory oversight of Democratic Republic of Congo (RDC)". The L-410UVP is only rated for a maximum of 17 passengers, but there were 21 people aboard, including three crew. Karibu Airways
Karibu Airways was an airline in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It stood on the List of air carriers banned in the EU. Due to two plane crashes in 2007 (see below) the confidence in the airline was lost. subsequently, all operations came to a halt. The airline was never officially disestablished, but as of March 2009 no staff is employed anymore. Accidents and Incidents *21 June 2007: One passenger was killed and thirteen injured, when a Let L-410UVP turboprop-powered aircraft (reg 9Q-CEU) crashed into a swamp on takeoff from Kamina Airport. The aircraft came to rest lying on its roof. Investigations revealed that the aircraft was overloaded, carrying 22 passengers and 3 crew. A Let-410 aircraft is laid out for 19 passengers and 2 crew. Lubumbashi International Airport is an airport serving Lubumbashi, Democratic Republic of the Congo. History Lubumbashi International Airport was founded in colonial times as the Elisabethville Airport. It was also known as Luano airport. This airport played a high-profile role during the Katanga war. The terrain and climate of the Congo Basin present serious barriers to road and rail construction, and the distances are enormous across this vast country.
