Frederick W. Plaisted
Frederick William Plaisted (July 26, 1865 – March 4, 1943) was an American politician and the 48th Governor of Maine. Early life Plaisted was born in Bangor, Maine, on July 26, 1865, the son of Sarah J. (Mason) Plaisted and Harris Plaisted, who served as governor from 1881 to 1883. He studied at local schools and at St. Johnsbury Academy in Vermont. Plaisted established a career in publishing, and in 1889 succeeded his father as publisher and editor of ''The New Age'' newspaper in Augusta. Plaisted also became active in the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, and attained the honorary rank of lieutenant colonel after serving on the staff of the organization's national commander in the early 1890s. Afterwards, he was frequently addressed in newspapers and other records as "Colonel" Plaisted. Politics Plaisted served as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1896 and again in 1900. 1896 Democratic National Convention
The 1896 Democratic National Convention, held at the Chicago Coliseum from July 7 to July 11, was the scene of William Jennings Bryan's nomination as the Democratic presidential candidate for the 1896 U.S. presidential election. At age 36, Bryan was the youngest presidential nominee in American history, only one year older than the constitutional minimum. Bryan's keynote "Cross of Gold" address, delivered prior to his nomination, lambasted Eastern monied classes for supporting the gold standard at the expense of the average worker. This was a repudiation of Cleveland administration's policy, but proved popular with the delegates to the convention. Bryan secured the nomination on the fifth ballot over Richard P. Bland. 1910 Maine Gubernatorial Election
The 1910 Maine gubernatorial election took place on September 12, 1910. Incumbent Republican Governor Bert M. Fernald was defeated for re-election by Democratic candidate Frederick W. Plaisted. Plaisted was the first Democrat elected Governor of Maine since his father, Harris M. Plaisted, who won election as a Greenback-Democrat fusion candidate in 1880. This election was also the first time since 1850 that the Democratic candidate won over 50% of the vote; a feat that wouldn't be repeated until the election of 1932. In other words, of the 54 gubernatorial elections from 1850 until 1932, this was the only time the Democratic candidate received at least 50% of the vote. In 2003, the Saturday morning edition of the Journal Tribune was renamed "York County Weekend." In 2013, the Sunday edition of the Journal Tribune was launched. Malaga Island
Malaga Island is a island at the mouth of the New Meadows River in Casco Bay, Maine, United States. It was the site of an interracial community from the American Civil War until 1911, when the residents were forcibly evicted from the island. It is now an uninhabited reserve owned and managed by the Maine Coast Heritage Trust. Public daytime access is permitted. History Allen Breed writes that there are multiple theories of how the colony formed. "Some say the island was a convenient place for merchant seaman to drop their black paramours before sailing home to their wives" or being a stop on the Underground Railroad, but neither of these theories have evidence to back up their claims.
