Frederick S. Mannix
Frederick Stephen Mannix (3 February 1881 – 14 July 1951) was a Canadian businessman and the founder of Alberta's dynastic Mannix family. In 1898, Mannix started a contracting business and by the end of his life had built it into one of the largest construction firms in western Canada. Upon his death, the family business passed to his son Frederick Charles Mannix. The Mannix family business interests are now worth around $3.3 billion and are controlled by third-generation members Frederick Philip Mannix and Ronald Neil Mannix. Biography Frederick Stephen Mannix was born on 3 February 1881 on a farm near Stonewall, Manitoba, to George Charles Mannix (1845–1934) and Frances Bunn (1849–1918). Stonewall, Manitoba
Stonewall is a town in the Canadian province of Manitoba with a population of 5,046 as of the 2021 census. The town is situated approximately north of Winnipeg on PTH 67. It is known for its limestone quarries. The local festival is the Quarry Days which is usually held over three days in August on Main Street. The town is surrounded by the R.M. of Rockwood. History When the last ice age retreated, as well as the prairies, escarpments such as Riding Mountain were left behind. In addition to these, smaller elevations were left behind such as Stony Mountain and Stonewall. It is believed that these escarpments were used as look-outs by early hunters approximately 4,000 to 5,000 years ago. These formations were later used as buffalo jumps by the indigenous populations. William Sinclair (fur Trader)
William Sinclair (b. c. 1794 – 12 October 1868) was a chief factor of the Hudson's Bay Company. He was a brother of James Sinclair and his father, also William Sinclair, founded the first fort at Oxford House. William was four when his father was building the HBC post at Oxford House and he joined the company there in 1808 and worked in that district until 1816 when he was called to the company headquarters in Britain. Weather forced them to winter in James Bay and his resourcefulness in these trying circumstances furthered his career. Sinclair was an important part of the Bow River expedition of 1822–23 led by Donald McKenzie who was Governor of the Red River Colony and an explorer/fur trader. The trek was to the forks of the South Saskatchewan and Red Deer rivers. Stony Plain is a town in the Edmonton Metropolitan Region of Alberta, Canada that is surrounded by Parkland County. It is west of Edmonton adjacent to the City of Spruce Grove and sits on Treaty 6 land. Stony Plain is known for its many painted murals representing various periods, events and people throughout the town's history. The town was originally known as Dog Rump Creek. History The name of the town is believed to have come from one of two possible origins. The first is that the Stoney people camped in the area historically. The second possibility is that Dr. James Hector, a geologist on the Palliser Expedition, noticed boulders scattered across the area. The official name for the settlement was adopted in 1892. Morrison–Knudsen (MK) was an American civil engineering and construction company, with headquarters in Boise, Idaho. MK designed and constructed major infrastructure throughout the world and was one of the consortium of firms that built Hoover Dam, San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge, the Trans-Alaska Pipeline, and many other large projects of American infrastructure.
