Frederick Paget
Colonel Frederick Paget (9 March 1807 – 4 January 1866) was a British soldier and Whig politician. Background Paget was the son of the Honourable Berkeley Paget, sixth son of Henry Paget, 1st Earl of Uxbridge. His mother was Sophia, daughter of the Hon. William Bucknall. He was the nephew of Henry Paget, 1st Marquess of Anglesey, Sir Arthur Paget, Sir Edward Paget and Sir Charles Paget. Military and political career Paget served in the Coldstream Guards and achieved the rank of captain. In 1832 he was returned to parliament for Beaumaris, a seat he held until 1847 when he was succeeded by his cousin Lord George Paget. Family Paget married Maria Georgiana, daughter of Charles Grenfell, in 1856. He died in January 1866, aged 58. His wife survived him by over 30 years and died in September 1900. Whigs (British Political Party)
The Whigs were a political faction and then a political party in the Parliaments of England, Scotland, Ireland, Great Britain and the United Kingdom. Between the 1680s and the 1850s, the Whigs contested power with their rivals, the Tories. The Whigs merged into the new Liberal Party with the Peelites and Radicals in the 1850s, and other Whigs left the Liberal Party in 1886 to form the Liberal Unionist Party, which merged into the Liberals' rival, the modern day Conservative Party, in 1912. The Whigs began as a political faction that opposed absolute monarchy and Catholic Emancipation, supporting constitutional monarchism with a parliamentary system. They played a central role in the Glorious Revolution of 1688 and were the standing enemies of the Roman Catholic Stuart kings and pretenders. Charles George James Arbuthnot
General Charles George James Arbuthnot, DL (180121 October 1870) was a British general. Early life Arbuthnot was born at sea aboard the frigate ''Juno'' and raised at Woodford, Northamptonshire. His father, Charles Arbuthnot, was a prominent Tory politician, diplomat and confidant of the Duke of Wellington. He was made a Page of Honour to George III in 1812 (at the age of eleven or twelve). Military career Arbuthnot was made an Ensign in the Grenadier Guards in 1816, was promoted to Captain of the 28th Regiment in 1820, and was made lieutenant colonel of the 72nd Regiment in 1825. He was returned to Parliament from the rotten borough of Tregony in 1831, but resigned the seat in the following year by becoming Steward of the Manor of East Hundred. On 19 May 1831, he left the 72nd and became lieutenant-colonel of the 90th Regiment, replacing Lord George Russell. In 1833, Arbuthnot married Hon. Coldstream ( gd, An Sruthan Fuar , sco, Caustrim) is a town and civil parish in the Scottish Borders area of Scotland. A former burgh, Coldstream is the home of the Coldstream Guards, a regiment in the British Army. Description Coldstream lies on the north bank of the River Tweed in Berwickshire, while Northumberland in England lies to the south bank, with Cornhill-on-Tweed the nearest village. A Page of Honour is a ceremonial position in the Royal Household of the Sovereign of the United Kingdom. It requires attendance on state occasions, but does not now involve the daily duties which were once attached to the office of page. The only physical activity involved is usually carrying the long train of the Queen's robes. While a page is a comparatively low-ranking servant, a Page of Honour is a distinguished position. It is usually a distinction granted to teenage sons of members of the nobility and gentry, and especially of senior members of the Royal Household.
