Frederick N. Howser
Frederick N. Howser (April 11, 1905 – April 26, 1987) was the 22nd Attorney General of California. Early career Howser was born in Nebraska on April 11, 1905. He attended USC Law School and worked as chief deputy city attorney for the city of Long Beach in the late 1930s. In 1940, Howser was elected to the first of two terms in the California State Assembly, representing Long Beach. Howser was appointed Los Angeles County District Attorney in 1943, following the death of John F. Dockweiler. Howser was elected for a full term as District Attorney in 1944. As both District Attorney and a member of the Assembly, Howser maintained ties to powerful liquor lobbyist Arthur Samish. Samish would later claim to have "maneuvered" Howser into the chairmanship of the Assembly's Public Morals Committee before later steering his appointment as District Attorney. Arthur Samish
Arthur H. Samish (August 9, 1897 – February 12, 1974) was a California lobbyist, representing movie studios, racetracks, lawyers, insurance companies, fishing, cigarette, liquor and brewing interests. Politically powerful throughout his career, he was convicted of tax evasion in 1953, which led to a three-year stint in prison beginning in 1956 as well as millions of dollars in penalties. He retired from politics in 1959 and died in San Francisco in 1974. William Harrison Standley
William Harrison Standley (18 December 1872 – 25 October 1963) was an Admiral (United States), admiral in the United States Navy, who served as Chief of Naval Operations from 1933 to 1937. He also served as the U.S. ambassador to the Soviet Union from 1941 until 1943. Early life Standley was born in Ukiah, California, where his grandfather operated a hotel and his father, "Doc" Standley, was Mendocino County, California, Mendocino County Sheriff. Anthony Cornero Stralla also known as "the Admiral" and "Tony the Hat" (August 18, 1899 – July 31, 1955) was a bootlegger and gambling entrepreneur in Southern California from the 1920s through the 1950s. During his varied career, he bootlegged liquor into Los Angeles, ran legal gambling ships in international waters, and legally operated casinos in Las Vegas, Nevada. Life and career Early life Antonio Cornero was born in Lequio Tanaro, Province of Cuneo, in the Piedmont region of Northern Italy. Cornero and his family immigrated to the United States after his father lost the farm in a card game and a fire destroyed their harvest. Cornero's father died a few years later and his mother married Luigi Stralla, a former suitor from Italy. After their arrival in San Francisco, Cornero used the aliases Tony Cornero and Tony Stralla as he signed on to merchant ships bound for the Far East.
