Fred Hobbs
Frederick (Fred) Hobbs (17 December 1841 – 13 May 1920) was Mayor of Christchurch, New Zealand 1874–1877 for two terms; he was the first mayor who served more than one term. He is credited with having made significant improvements to the drainage system, and thus improving health in the wider Christchurch area. Upon his lobbying, The Christchurch District Drainage Act 1875 was passed, and Hobbs became the first chairman of the Christchurch Drainage Board. The family were tailors and the location of their business premises in the north-east quadrant of Cathedral Square gave the area the name of Hobbs' corner. Fred Hobbs commissioned a new building of permanent materials for the site, which became known as Cathedral Chambers and which stood there from the mid-1880s to the 1970s. The locality changed name to Broadway corner, based on the popular café that occupied the first floor; this name is no longer in use in Christchurch. The Hobbs family was known for singing. Frederick H. Hobbs (January 6, 1934 – July 22, 2005) is a former member of the Pennsylvania State Senate, serving as a Republican from 1967 to 1976. Formative years Born in Pottsville, Pennsylvania on January 6, 1934, Frederick Hobbs was a son of H. (Howard) Blake Hobbs (1911–1973) of Nescopeck and Marian Hause (1908–1984) of Pottsville. His father founded the Telephone Answering Service in Allentown in 1939, and was a high school teacher in Lehigh County. Hobbs graduated from Governor Dummer Academy in Byfield, Massachusetts, Amherst College and Georgetown University School of Law. He then also served in the United States Army. Career and family Beginning in 1961, he maintained a law practice in Pottsville while serving as solicitor for the Schuylkill County Housing Authority, the Schuylkill County Commissioners and the Blythe Township Planning Commission, and also representing the State Workers' Insurance Fund. Frederick Hobbs (singer)
Frederick Henry Hobbs (29 July 1874 – 11 April 1942) was a New Zealand-born singer, actor and theatre manager. After performing as a concert singer in New Zealand and Australia, and in opera and musicals in Britain, he joined the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company in 1914. There he played leading baritone and bass-baritone roles in the Gilbert and Sullivan operas for six years. After touring in Australasia with the J. C. Williamson company, he returned to England and became the stage manager for D'Oyly Carte in 1923 and its business manager from 1927 until his death. Early years Hobbs was born in Christchurch, New Zealand, to a large family with a background in music."Obituary: Mr. F. H. Hobbs"
