Frederick Berkeley, 5th Earl Of Berkeley
Frederick Augustus Berkeley, 5th Earl of Berkeley (24 May 1745 – 8 August 1810) was a British peer. Origins and education Berkeley was the eldest son and heir of Augustus Berkeley, 4th Earl of Berkeley by Elizabeth, daughter of Henry Drax, of Ellerton Abbey, Yorkshire. He succeeded his father in the Earldom and as 13th Baron Berkeley in 1755.Cokayne's ''Complete Peerage'', Volume II (St Catherine Press, London, 1912), at pages 142-143 Career In 1766, Berkeley was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Gloucestershire, High Steward of Gloucester, Constable of St Briavels, Warden of the Forest of Dean and Colonel of the South Gloucestershire Militia, which he commanded until his death. He served as a colonel in the army in 1779 and 1794 when his regiment was embodied for full-time service. George W. E. Burke's Peerage Limited is a British genealogical publisher founded in 1826, when the Irish genealogist John Burke began releasing books devoted to the ancestry and heraldry of the peerage, baronetage, knightage and landed gentry of Great Britain and Ireland. His first publication, a ''Genealogical and Heraldic Dictionary of the Peerage and Baronetage of the United Kingdom'', was updated sporadically until 1847, when the company began releasing new editions every year as ''Burke's Peerage, Baronetage and Knightage'' (often shortened to just ''Burke's Peerage''). Thomas Reynolds-Moreton, 1st Earl Of Ducie
Thomas Reynolds-Moreton, 1st Earl of Ducie (31 August 1776 – 22 June 1840) was the first Earl of Ducie. He was the son of Francis Reynolds-Moreton, 3rd Baron Ducie, and his wife, the former Mary Provis. and was educated at Eton College and Exeter College, Oxford. He succeeded to the title of 4th Baron Ducie of Tortworth on 19 August 1808. On 4 April 1809 he was commissioned as Lieutenant-Colonel Commandant of the Royal West Gloucestershire Local Militia at Bristol. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1814. He was created 1st Earl of Ducie on 28 January 1837. He married Lady Frances Herbert, daughter of Henry Herbert, 1st Earl of Carnarvon, and Lady Elizabeth Alicia Maria Wyndham on 6 December 1797. The title Baron Berkeley originated as a feudal title and was subsequently created twice in the Peerage of England by writ. It was first granted by writ to Thomas de Berkeley, 1st Baron Berkeley (1245–1321), 6th feudal Baron Berkeley, in 1295, but the title of that creation became extinct at the death of his great-great-grandson, the fifth Baron by writ, when no male heirs to the barony by writ remained, although the feudal barony continued. The next creation by writ was in 1421, for the last baron's nephew and heir James Berkeley. His son and successor William was created Viscount Berkeley in 1481, Earl of Nottingham in 1483, and Marquess of Berkeley in 1488. He had no surviving male issue, so the Marquessate and his other non-inherited titles became extinct on his death in 1491, whilst the barony passed ''de jure'' to his younger brother Maurice. Horace St Paul
Sir Horace David Cholwell St Paul, 1st Baronet (6 January 1775 – 8 October 1840) was an English soldier and Member of Parliament. He was born in Paris, the eldest son of Horace St. Paul of Ewart Park, Northumberland. His younger brother was Henry St Paul, MP for Berwick-upon-Tweed from 1812 to 1820. It would be hard to describe St. Paul's background more clearly than R.G. Thorne does: 'St. Paul's father, a Northumbrian gentleman driven into exile after killing a man in a duel, was a soldier of fortune in the Seven Years' War, who returned to England with an Austrian title and a royal pardon, subsequently distinguishing himself in diplomacy, before retiring to his ancestral home.' Craven FitzHardinge Berkeley (May 1805 – 1 July 1855) was a British Whig politician. Background Berkeley was the seventh son of Frederick Berkeley, 5th Earl of Berkeley, and Mary, daughter of William Cole. He was the younger brother of William Berkeley, 1st Earl FitzHardinge, Maurice Berkeley, 1st Baron FitzHardinge and Henry FitzHardinge Berkeley (born to the same mother but declared illegitimate according to a decision by the House of Lords) and also of the Hon. Grantley Berkeley. Political career Craven entered Parliament for Cheltenham in 1832, a seat he held until 1847. In the 1847 general election the seat was won by Sir Willoughby Jones, but his election was declared void in May the following year. Berkeley was elected in his place in June 1848 but his election was declared void two months later. Henry Berkeley Fitzhardinge Maxse
Lieutenant-Colonel Sir Henry Berkeley Fitzhardinge Maxse (1832, Effingham Hill, England – 10 September 1883, St. John's, Newfoundland) was a Newfoundland colonial leader and a captain during the Crimean War. Maxse was commissioned lieutenant in the Grenadier Guards in 1849 and transferred to the 13th Light Dragoons and then the 21st Foot in 1852. He was promoted captain in 1854 and transferred to the Coldstream Guards in 1855. He was promoted major in 1855 and lieutenant-colonel in 1863. He was wounded at the Battle of Balaclava and received medals of honour for his service. He was lieutenant-governor of Heligoland in 1863 and appointed as governor the following year. Maxse became governor of Newfoundland in 1881. Maxse was instrumental in the construction of the Newfoundland Railway.
