Frederick Manson Bailey
Frederick Manson Bailey (8 March 1827 – 25 June 1915) was a botanist active in Australia, who made valuable contributions to the characterisation of the flora of Queensland. He was known by his middle name, Manson. Early life Bailey was born in London, the second son of John Bailey (botanist), John Bailey (horticulturist and first Colonial Botanist of South Australia) and his wife, ''née'' Manson. Frederick was educated at the foundation school of the Independent Church at Hackney, London. The family went to Australia in 1838 arriving at Adelaide on 22 March 1839 in the ''Buckinghamshire''. John Bailey was appointed colonial botanist soon afterwards and was asked to form a botanic garden. John Bailey resigned in 1841, began farming, and subsequently started a plant nursery at Adelaide. Frederick Marshman Bailey (3 February 1882, Lahore, British India – 17 April 1967, Stiffkey, Norfolk) was a British political officer and one of the last protagonists of ''The Great Game.'' His expeditions in Tibet and Assam Himalaya gave him many opportunities to pursue his hobbies of photography, butterfly collecting, and trophy hunting in the high Tibetan region. Over 2000 of his bird specimens were presented to the Natural History Museum, although his personal collection is now held in the American Museum of Natural History, New York.Anon. Frederick Bailey FRSE FRSGS (11 July 1840–21 December 1912) was a British Army officer serving in the Royal Engineers who headed the Indian Imperial Forestry Service, in charge of overseeing the cultivation and export of timber to the British Empire. Life He was born around 1842 the son of Catherine Irvine and her husband, Charles Bailey (1803-1865), the son of Charles Bailey, twice Mayor of Bedford. He was commissioned into the Royal Engineers in 1859. In 1871 he joined the Indian Forest Service and became Head of this service and Inspector General of Forests in India, succeeding Hugh Cleghorn in this task. In this service he was based in Lahore. In 1878 he established the First Indian Forestry School at Dehra Dun and served as its first director. In 1890 he returned to UK and lectured on a newly created course on Forestry at the University of Edinburgh from 1890 to 1907. In 1894 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. Frederick Raymond Bailey (2 November 1919 – 8 May 1985) was an English cricketer. Bailey was a left-handed batsman. He was born in Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire. Bailey made his debut for Staffordshire in the 1939 Minor Counties Championship against Northumberland. He played Minor counties cricket for Staffordshire from 1939 to 1963 (excluding the six seasons in which there was no county cricket due to World War II), making 124 appearances. In 1950, he made his first-class debut for a combined Minor Counties team against the Marylebone Cricket Club at Lord's. He made two further first-class appearances for the Minor Counties, against the touring Indians in 1959 and the touring South Africans in 1960. In these three first-class matches he scored a total of 118 runs at an average of 29.50, with a high score of 79. This score came against the Indians. Frederick James Bailey (1889 – 30 March 1965) was Archdeacon of Malta from 1948 to 1964. Bailey was educated at Dorchester Missionary College; and ordained in 1923. After curacies in Andros and Nassau he was Priest in charge at St George's Church, Tombland, Norwich, then Vicar of St Simon and St Jude's Church, Norwich. He was Chaplain to the Embassy of the United Kingdom, Madrid and then served the Anglican Church overseas in Florence Italy, Montana, Switzerland and Sliema, Malta. Frederick Douglass (born Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey, February 1817 or 1818 – February 20, 1895) was an American social reformer, abolitionist, orator, writer, and statesman. After escaping from slavery in Maryland, he became a national leader of the abolitionist movement in Massachusetts and New York, becoming famous for his oratory and incisive antislavery writings.
