Frederick Arm
Frederick Arm is an inlet on the South Coast of British Columbia, extending north from Cordero Channel between Lougborough and Bute Inlets. Originally conferred with the name Ensenada del Estero by Spanish explorers Galiano and Valdes, its current name was given c.1864 by Captain Pender, RN (namesake of Pender Island), after Staff Commander Frederick John Owen Evans, naval hydrographer, British Admiralty. The name Estero survives in the vicinity in the form of Estero Basin, which lies between the north end of Frederick Arm and the south end of Bute Inlet and Estero Peak, on the south side of Estero Basin. "Estero" means "lagoon", while Ensenada de Estero means "Bay of the Lagoon". An inlet is a (usually long and narrow) indentation of a shoreline, such as a small arm, bay, sound, fjord, lagoon or marsh, that leads to an enclosed larger body of water such as a lake, estuary, gulf or marginal sea. Loughborough Inlet
Loughborough Inlet is one of the lesser principal inlets of the British Columbia Coast. It penetrates the Coast Mountains on the north side of the Discovery Islands archipelago, running about from its head at the mouth of the Stafford River to Chancellor Channel and Cordero Channel, which are on the north side of West Thurlow Island. A further west along Chancellor Channel is Johnstone Strait. Loughborough Inlet averages about wide. Its mouth marks the east end of Chancellor Channel and the west end of Cordero Channel. The mouth of Loughborough Inlet is about midway between the mouths of Bute Inlet, to the east, and Knight Inlet, to the west. Because of the arrangement of the mountain ranges separating the inlets, the upper end of Loughborough Inlet is only about from the nearest waters of Knight Inlet, but much farther from Bute Inlet. Pender Island
Pender Island ( Saanich: ) is one of the Southern Gulf Islands located in the Gulf of Georgia, British Columbia, Canada. Pender Island is approximately in area and is home to about 2,250 permanent residents, as well as a large seasonal population. Like most of the rest of the Southern Gulf Islands, Pender Island enjoys a sub-Mediterranean climate and features open farmland, rolling forested hills, several lakes and small mountains, as well as many coves and beaches. Frederick John Owen Evans
Sir Frederick John Owen Evans (9 March 1815 – 20 December 1885), was an officer of the Royal Navy. He became a distinguished hydrographer during his career and served as Hydrographer of the Navy. Biography Evans, son of John Evans, a master in the Royal Navy, was born on 9 March 1815. He entered the navy as a second-class volunteer in 1828. After serving in and he was transferred in 1833 to , under Captain Richard Owen, and spent three years in surveying the coasts of Central America, the Demerara River, and the Bahama Banks. HMS ''San Josef'' was a 114-gun first-rate ship of the line of the Royal Navy. Originally built at Ferrol in Galicia for the Spanish Navy in 1782–83, she was captured from the Spanish Navy at the Battle of Cape St Vincent on 14 February 1797 (when she was still named in Spanish ''San José''). Frederick Sound (Canada)
Frederick Sound is a sound in the Central Coast of British Columbia, Canada. It is the largest branch of Seymour Inlet and along with that inlet was named in honour of Frederick Seymour, second governor of the Colony of British Columbia. Frederick Sound has two inlets, one named Salmon Arm and the other unnamed. The complex maze of hidden waterways forming Seymour Inlet is in the region of Queen Charlotte Strait. Seymour Inlet
Seymour Inlet is one of the lesser travelled of the principal inlets of the British Columbia Coast. Unlike larger inlets such as Knight or Bute, it is not flanked by mountains but by relatively low, but still rugged, coastal hill-country and forms a maze of complex, narrow waterways and tidal pools and lagoons. It is located within a corresponding maze of peninsulas on the mainland on the northwest side of the Queen Charlotte Strait region. Its main arm is in length from the mouth of the Seymour River to the mouth of its north arm, Belize Inlet, which is about in length and has its own side inlets, narrow waterways named Wentworth Sound and Alison Sound.
