Frederic Eggleston
Sir Frederic William Eggleston (17 October 1875 – 12 November 1954) was an Australian lawyer, politician, diplomat and writer. Early life The eldest son of lawyer John Waterhouse Eggleston and his wife, Emily, his grandfather was the Methodist minister Rev. John Eggleston. His maternal grandparents were also Methodists. His mother died early in his life in 1884 and his father married Ada Crouch in 1887. Career Eggleston was on good terms with John Latham and in 1902 founded a group known as the 'Boobooks' with him. Eggleston was elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly as the member for Member for St Kilda in 1920 and was appointed Attorney-General of Victoria and Solicitor-General of Victoria (19241927) in the government of John Allan. Burnett Gray
Alfred Charles Burnett Gray (21 August 1884 – 27 May 1968) was an Australian politician. He was born in Geraldton in Western Australia to merchant Charles Watson Gray and Mary Ann Thomas. He worked as a secretary at Melbourne Children's Hospital in 1901 but returned to manage his father's business in Western Australia from 1902 to 1906. He was a gold miner at Bullfinch in 1910 and Ararat in 1911 before becoming a clerk with a Melbourne wool firm in 1912. On 18 March 1910 he married Queenie Hilary Margaret Smith. During World War I he served with the 22nd Battalion and was wounded. He served on St Kilda City Council from 1914 to 1915 and from 1920 to 1948 and was mayor from 1922 to 1923 and from 1926 to 1927; he was the first returned soldier to serve as mayor of any Victorian city. William Slater (c. 20 May 1890 – 19 June 1960) was an Australian lawyer, politician and diplomat. Early life Slater is believed to have been born around 20 May 1890 to William Slater, a travelling salesman and Maria (nee O’Reilly or Reilly) in Wangaratta, Victoria. He had two siblings. After his father left his family when he was four years old, he and his two siblings were brought up by his mother in poverty in Prahran. After briefly attending Armadale State School, Slater left school early to sell newspapers outside the Alfred Hospital Melbourne, he had no shoes. Being caught and fined for nude swimming in the Yarra River led him to decide to better himself. He continued his education at Try Boys’ Society South Yarra and by reading at Prahran Free Library where he met Maurice Blackburn.
