Freddie Records
Freddie Records is an American independent record label founded in Corpus Christi, Texas on November 1, 1969, by musician Freddie Martinez. Initially operating as a recording studio and distributor for Martinez, he expanded his roster to include other musicians of Tejano music in fear of his company folding if he no longer was commercially successful. The label began producing albums for Ramon Ayala, Agustin Ramirez, Oscar Martinez, and Joe Bravo. It became commonplace for albums produced by Freddie Records to appear on ''Billboard''s Latin albums chart in the state of Texas. Ayala became the company's top-selling act, allowing Freddie Records to be commercially viable throughout the 1970s and 1980s. In 1978, Freddie Records sponsored a concert at Cole Park in Corpus Christi to record Little Joe's ''Live for Schlitz'' album. Little Joe (singer)
José María De León Hernández (born October 17, 1940), known professionally as Little Joe is an American tejano performer who grew up in Temple, Texas, and lives in Temple, Texas. Career Little Joe is of Mexican descent. Hernández told the '' Stockton Record'' in 2015 that he was born "in a three-wall, dirt-floor garage on a cold stormy night," the seventh of 13 children. His father, Salvador, was known as "La Cotorra" (the parakeet) and was a troubadour. His mother, Amelia DeLeon, was a trained pianist. "My dad and aunts all played instruments and sang," he told the ''Riverside Press-Enterprise'' (Nov. 18, 2015). We'd go to parties that would last until three in the morning. Corpus Christi Caller-Times
The ''Corpus Christi Caller-Times'' is the newspaper of record for Corpus Christi, Texas. History There has been a newspaper in Corpus Christi for almost as long as there has been a town. In 1883, the ''Caller'' was started in a frame building at 310 North Chaparral, now the site of Green's Jewelers. Roy Miller was editor of the ''Caller'' 1907–1911, when it was an enterprise of the King Ranch; he sold his interest in it in 1929. Later, there was a newspaper called the ''Times''. Both were located on North Chaparral in 1920. In the late 1920s, the two were combined to become the ''Caller-Times''. The present building was erected in 1935 at 820 North Lower Broadway and has subsequently been remodeled and enlarged several times. Regional Mexican Music
Regional styles of Mexican music vary greatly from state to state. Norteño, banda, duranguense, Son mexicano and other Mexican country music genres are often known as regional Mexican music because each state produces different musical sounds and lyrics. Baja California : Baja California has a characteristic style derived from the huapango norteño, known as calabaceado. Calabaceado is a type dance that was created in the 1940s based in the fact that "norteño music" and typical cowboy cultures were being mixed and this dance shows the mixture of both styles. Other norteño forms are also popular, such as Vals Norteño, Chotis, Mazurka and mariachi. Chiapas : Chiapas has produced many marimba bands and artists, such as Marimbas de Chiapas. The Grammy Award for Best Mexican/Mexican-American Album was an award presented to recording artists for quality albums in the Mexican music genre at the Grammy Awards, a ceremony that was established in 1958 and originally called the Gramophone Awards. Capitol Latin (formerly EMI Latin) is a brand of Universal Music Latin Entertainment, a division of Universal Music Group. Previously, it was a subsidiary of EMI. The Tejano Music Awards (TMA) is an accolade created by former arts teacher and musician Rudy Trevino in 1980. The accolade recognizes outstanding performers of Tejano music, a German polka-based Latin music genre recorded in Spanish or English-language. The annual presentation ceremony features performances by Tejano artists and bands and the presentation of all awards. La Sombra
La Sombra de Chicago or La Sombra de Tony Guerrero or even the Windy City Boys is a Tejano band founded by Tony Guerrero. Originally from the Chicago suburb of Aurora, Illinois, the group gained national acclaim and success after moving to Corpus Christi, Texas, the headquarters of their label, Freddie Records. Career La Sombra released over twenty full-length studio albums featuring songs in both Spanish and English. Following numerous line-up changes, the group disbanded in 1995, briefly reuniting in 2008 for a number of live shows. La Sombra has been credited with influencing the Tejano and cumbia music fields in terms of musical style, dress, and concert performances as well as a generation of newer artists including the Kumbia Kings.
