Fred Wood (baseball)
Frederick Llewellyn Wood (July 21, 1865 – November 17, 1935) was a Canadians, Canadian professional baseball player. He played parts of two seasons in Major League Baseball in 1884–85. Wood games played, played in 12 games for the Detroit Wolverines of the National League (baseball), National League in 1884, splitting his fielding time between catcher and right fielder, right field. In 42 at bats, he gathered just two hit (baseball), hits for a .048 batting average (baseball), batting average, scored four run (baseball), runs, and had three base on balls, bases on balls. Catcher
Catcher is a Baseball positions, position in baseball and softball. When a Batter (baseball), batter takes their at bat, turn to hit, the catcher crouches behind home plate, in front of the (home plate, home) Umpire (baseball), umpire, and receives the ball from the pitcher. In addition to this primary duty, the catcher is also called upon to master many other skills in order to field the position well. The role of the catcher is similar to that of the wicket-keeper in cricket. Positioned behind home plate and facing toward the outfield, the catcher can see the whole field, and is therefore in the best position to direct and lead the other players in a defensive play. In baseball, an at bat (AB) or time at bat is a batter's turn batting against a pitcher. An at bat is different from a plate appearance. A batter is credited with a plate appearance regardless of what happens during their turn at bat, but a batter is credited with an at bat only if that plate appearance does not have one of the results enumerated below. While at bats are used to calculate certain statistics, including batting average and slugging percentage, a player can qualify for the season-ending rankings in these categories only if they accumulate 502 plate appearances during the season. Pete Wood
Peter Burke Wood (1 February 1867 – 15 March 1923) was a Canadian-American professional baseball pitcher. A right-hander, he played parts of two seasons in Major League Baseball, 1885 and 1889. A native of Dundas, Ontario, Wood made his major league debut on 15 July 1885 with the Buffalo Bisons, the team which also featured on its roster his brother, Fred. The brothers were with the team for the remainder of the season, at the end of which Fred retired. Four years later, Wood returned to Major League Baseball, playing for the Philadelphia Quakers in 1889. His final game with the team was on September 7. Base On Balls
A base on balls (BB), also known as a walk, occurs in baseball when a batter receives four pitches that the umpire calls '' balls'', and is in turn awarded first base without the possibility of being called out. The base on balls is defined in Section 2.00 of baseball's Official Rules, and further detail is given in 6.08(a). It is considered a faux pas for a professional player to literally walk to first base; the batter-runner and any advancing runners normally jog on such a play. The term "base on balls" distinguishes a walk from the other manners in which a batter can be awarded first base without liability to be put out (e.g., hit by pitch (HBP), catcher's interference).
