Fred Webster (Australian Footballer)
Frederick Charles Webster (19 April 1935 – 17 December 2012) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Melbourne in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Webster made three appearances in the 1955 VFL season, after making his debut in a win over Geelong on the Melbourne Cricket Ground. His two other games were against Footscray. The following season, Webster joined Sandringham in the Victorian Football Association, with whom he played until 1963. The Sandringham Football Club, nicknamed The Zebras, is an Australian rules football club based in Melbourne which was formed in 1929 and plays in the Victorian Football League (VFL) which was formerly called the Victorian Football Association (VFA). Australian football, also called Australian rules football or Aussie rules, or more simply football or footy, is a contact sport played between two teams of 18 players on an oval field, often a modified cricket ground. 1955 VFL Season
The 1955 VFL season was the 59th season of the Victorian Football League (VFL), the highest level senior Australian rules football competition in Victoria. The season featured twelve clubs, ran from 16 April until 17 September, and comprised an 18-game home-and-away season followed by a finals series featuring the top four clubs. The premiership was won by the Melbourne Football Club for the seventh time, after it defeated by 28 points in the 1955 VFL Grand Final. In Australian sport, the best and fairest award recognises the player(s) adjudged to have had the best performance in a game or over a season for a given sporting club or competition. The awards are sometimes dependent on not receiving a suspension for misconduct or breaching the rules during that season. In the Australian Football League (AFL), the Brownlow Medal is awarded to the player who, provided he has not been suspended during the season, receives the most votes from the umpires for being the Fairest and Best player in games during the home and away season. In each game, the umpires award three votes to the player they judge to be the best afield in that game, two votes to the second-best player and one vote to the third-best player.
