Fred Jüssi
Fred Jüssi (born January 29, 1935) is an Estonian biologist, nature writer and photographer. Jüssi was born in Aruba, Netherlands Antilles, where his father worked for a Venezuelan oil company. His family returned to Estonia and settled in Tallinn when Jüssi was 3 years old. After finishing high school in Tallinn he studied biology and zoology at the University of Tartu, graduating in 1958. He has worked as a school teacher (from 1958 to 1960 in Emmaste, Hiiumaa), as inspector for nature protection (1962–1975), radio broadcaster for Eesti Raadio, freelance writer and nature campaigner. In Eesti Raadio he ran the program ''Looduse aabits'' (ABC book of nature) from 1976 to 1986. In October 1980, Jüssi was a signatory of the Letter of 40 Intellectuals, a public letter in which forty prominent Estonian intellectuals defended the Estonian language and protested the Russification policies of the Kremlin in Estonia. Kremlin
The Kremlin ( rus, Московский Кремль, r=Moskovskiy Kreml', p=ˈmɐˈskofskʲɪj krʲemlʲ, t=Moscow Kremlin) is a fortified complex in the center of Moscow founded by the Rurik dynasty. It is the best known of the kremlins (Russian citadels), and includes five palaces, four cathedrals, and the enclosing Kremlin Wall with Kremlin towers. In addition, within this complex is the Grand Kremlin Palace that was formerly the Tsar's Moscow residence. The complex now serves as the official residence of the President of the Russian Federation and as a museum with almost 3 million visitors in 2017. The Kremlin overlooks the Moskva River to the south, Saint Basil's Cathedral and Red Square to the east, and the Alexander Garden to the west. Eerik Kumari Award () is an award given since 1989 to those who have excelled in bioscience in Estonia. It is named after Eerik Kumari (1912–1984), who was chairman of the National Conservation Committee of the Estonian Academy of Sciences from 1952 to 1977. Propeller (band)
Propeller is an Estonian punk band formed in 1978. Propeller were one of the first punk rock bands formed in the Estonian Soviet Socialist Republic, which was still subordinate to the Soviet Union. The band achieved a deal of notoriety on 22 September 1980, when they were invited by workers from Eesti Rahvusringhääling to perform a concert at halftime at Kadriorg Stadium in Tallinn during a football match and after the game. After performing to a crowd of approximately 7,000 people during the halftime show, Soviet authorities then forbid the band from playing their post-show concert, instigating a riot that soon swept through Tallinn. As the band was blamed for being the catalyst that sparked the riots, authorities forced Propeller to disband shortly afterward and all recordings held by Eesti Raadio were destroyed. Postimees
''Postimees'' () is an Estonian daily newspaper established on 5 June 1857, by Johann Voldemar Jannsen. In 1891, it became the first daily newspaper in Estonia. Its current editor-in-chief is Priit Hõbemägi. The paper has approximately 250 employees. ''Postimees'' is currently published six days a week and has the largest circulation and readership in Estonia with 55,000 copies sold during the workweek and over 72,000 on weekends. Ninety-seven percent of the paper's circulation is subscription-based with only three percent sold individually. The weekend edition of ''Postimees'', published on Saturdays, includes several separate sections: ''AK'' (), ''Arter'', and a television-guide.
