Fred Hess
Fred Hess (September 3, 1944, Abington, Pennsylvania – October 27, 2018) was an American jazz tenor saxophonist. Hess was raised in New Jersey and studied at Trenton State College. His early experiences include studies with saxophonist Phil Woods, a stint with bandleader Fred Waring, and composing music for the world premiere of a Sam Shepard play. As a composer, his influences encompass avant-garde classical sources, as well as Anthony Braxton and the members of the AACM. He moved to Boulder, Colorado, in 1981, where he founded the Boulder Creative Music Ensemble. He then completed further studies at the University of Colorado, Boulder, taking his doctorate in composition in 1991. He recorded his first albums as a leader in the early 1990s. He was the Director of Music Composition at Metro State College in Denver, Colorado. Abington Township is a township in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. It is adjacent to Philadelphia's northern fringe. The population was 55,310 as of the 2010 census, making it the second most populous township in Montgomery County after Lower Merion Township. The population density is 3603.3 per square mile (1,377/km2), making it the second most densely populated township in Montgomery County (following Cheltenham Township). Abington Township is one of Montgomery County's oldest communities, dating back before 1700 and being incorporated in 1704. Capri Records Ltd. is a jazz record label founded by record collector, photographer, and recording engineer Thomas C. Burns. Burns formed the Capri label following his Record Revival store which is now known as Jazz Record Revival, along with his future Tapestry Records label. The Colorado-based Capri Records has a catalog of more than one hundred titles by musicians such as bassists Ray Brown (musician), Ray Brown and Red Mitchell, trombonists Al Grey and Phil Wilson (trombonist), Phil Wilson, saxophonist Bud Shank and drummer Louie Bellson.
