Fred Hawking
Fred Hawking (22 September 1909 – 8 September 1988) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Geelong in the VFL during the 1930s. He was the cousin of Clyde Helmer. Hawking played his career as both a wingman and centreman. Mooroopna Football Club
The Mooroopna Football Netball Club, nicknamed the ''Cats'', is an Australian rules football and netball club based in the rural town of Mooroopna, Victoria. Former club journeyman Jake Whitford was banned from the club at the beginning of the 2014 season after sparking a brawl with future AFL star Clayton Oliver. Whitford would leave Australia in disgrace and would go on to hold an administrative position at the Multiplex Bulls of the now defunct AFL Middle East The club teams currently compete in the Goulburn Valley League, which Mooroopna is a founding member. The club has competed there during most of its career, leaving only after the end of World War II to play in the Central Goulburn Valley Football League (during which Mooroopna won the 1946 premiership). The Goulburn Valley Football Netball League is an Australian rules football and netball competition based in the Goulburn Valley region of Victoria, Australia. It is a member of the Victorian Country Football League and has won the Victorian Country Football Championships in 2003 and 2005. History The league was initially called the Goulburn Valley District Football Association(GVDFA) and dates back to May, 1893. Australian football, also called Australian rules football or Aussie rules, or more simply football or footy, is a contact sport played between two teams of 18 players on an oval field, often a modified cricket ground. The Australian Football League (AFL) is the only fully professional competition of Australian rules football. Through the AFL Commission, the AFL also serves as the sport's governing body and is responsible for controlling the laws of the game. Clyde Helmer
Reginald Clyde Helmer (22 April 1916 – 24 April 1945) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Geelong and Melbourne in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Family The son of Nils Helmer (1882–1967), and Eva May Helmer (1887–1971), née Hill, Reginald Clyde Helmer was born at Mooroopna on 22 April 1916. He was the nephew of Reginald Valentine Hill, D.S.O., the cousin of Fred Hawking, and the uncle of Geelong footballer John Helmer. He married Marjorie Mary Frances Gibson (1919–1983), later Mrs. Maurice Steeth, in 1944. Football A forward, Helmer could torpedo punt on either foot. Carji Greeves Medal
The Carji Greeves Medal is a name given in recent decades to an Australian rules football award given to the player(s) adjudged best and fairest for the Geelong Football Club for the season. The voting system has changed a number of times. For the 2017 AFL season, the voting panel consisted of the senior coach, director of coaching and the assistant coaches rating each player out of 15 after every game. The combined votes are averaged to give a final score for that game. To ensure players are not disadvantaged by injury, only a player's highest scoring 21 games count. For the 2022 AFL season, after each game, the Senior and assistant coaches reviewed and rated each players performance out of 10. Votes were polled in games where a players performance had been deemed of a high quality by the coaching group, and unlike previous seasons all matches counted towards their final total.
