Fred Cook (Welsh Footballer)
Frederick William Cook (20 January 1902 in Aberdare – 1966) was a Welsh international footballer who played in the Football League as an outside-left for Aberdare Athletic, Newport County and Portsmouth, for whom he appeared in the 1929 FA Cup Final. He was part of the Wales national football team between 1925 and 1931, playing eight matches. He played his first match on 14 February 1925 against Scotland and his last match on 18 November 1931 against England. Aberdare ( ; cy, Aberdâr) is a town in the Cynon Valley area of Rhondda Cynon Taf, Wales, at the confluence of the Rivers Dare (Dâr) and Cynon. Aberdare has a population of 39,550 (mid-2017 estimate). Aberdare is south-west of Merthyr Tydfil, north-west of Cardiff and east-north-east of Swansea. The 1929 FA Cup Final was an association football match between Bolton Wanderers and Portsmouth on 27 April 1929 at Wembley Stadium. Bolton won 2–0, with goals by Billy Butler and Harold Blackmore. It marked the 54th final of the Football Association Challenge Cup (FA Cup), the world's oldest football cup competition. It was Portsmouth's first FA Cup final and Bolton's fifth.
