Fred Bamford (footballer)
Frederick George Bamford (10 April 1887 – 30 March 1955) was an Australian rules football player at the Fitzroy Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL). He became a premiership player at Fitroy, playing in the 1916 VFL Grand Final, under the captaincy of Wally Johnson, with George Holden as coach. Bendigo ( ) is a city in Victoria, Australia, located in the Bendigo Valley near the geographical centre of the state and approximately north-west of Melbourne, the state capital. As of 2019, Bendigo had an urban population of 100,991, making it Australia's 19th-largest city, fourth-largest inland city and the fourth-most populous city in Victoria. 1911 VFL Season
The 1911 VFL season was the 15th season of the Victorian Football League (VFL), the highest level senior Australian rules football competition in Victoria. The season featured ten clubs, ran from 29 April until 23 September, and comprised an 18-game home-and-away season followed by a finals series featuring the top four clubs. The season was the beginning of the league's professional era, with clubs permitted for the first time to pay players beyond the reimbursement of expenses. The premiership was won by the Essendon Football Club for the third time, after it defeated by six points in the 1911 VFL Grand Final. The WT Peterson Community Oval, best known as the Brunswick Street Oval and also as the Fitzroy Cricket Ground, is a cricket and Australian rules football ground located in Edinburgh Gardens in Fitzroy North, Victoria. George Holden (Australian Rules Footballer)
George Hugh Holden (15 April 1889 – 21 July 1959) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Fitzroy in the Victorian Football League The Victorian Football League (VFL) is an Australian rules football league in Australia serving as one of the second-tier regional semi-professional competitions which sit underneath the fully professional Australian Football League (AFL). It ... (VFL). Holden was both a centreman and wingman during his career with Fitzroy, which began in 1908. He was club champion in his debut season, winning the best and fairest award for the second time in 1915. One of Fitzroy's best in their 1913 premiership, Holden was named as the club's coach three years later and was a premiership player again in his first year in the role. He also captained the club in 1917 and 1918 while remaining coach but had to retire at the start of the 1919 season after suffering a serious knee injury. Wally Johnson
Walter Simon Johnson (1 September 1887 – 9 October 1962) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Fitzroy in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Family The son of Thomas Henry Johnson (1866-1915), and Eliza Caroline Johnson (1863-1949), née Thomas, Walter Simon Johnson was born in Collingwood on 1 September 1887. He died on 9 October 1962. Football Having initially tried to play with Collingwood, Johnson made his debut for Fitzroy in 1907 and finished the year as the club's joint best and fairest winner. He played most of his career at half back but played up forward for his first three seasons, topping Fitzroy's goal-kicking in 1908 with 27 goals. The Australian Football League (AFL) is the only fully professional competition of Australian rules football.
