Fred Walters is a broadcast executive and journalist who was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the Philadelphia Broadcast Pioneers and in 2013 received the Lifetime Achievement Award of the Pennsylvania Associated Press Broadcasters Association. Broadcast career A native Philadelphian, Walters began his career with The Associated Press there while still an undergraduate at the University of Pennsylvania, after 36 months in the U.S. Navy. Walters was the editor on duty when Westinghouse's KYW (AM), KYW began its all-news format in 1965. He played a major role in establishing KYW Newsradio as a respected and successful news operation. When he led the newsroom, it was the only all-news station that was rated Number One in a major United States, American market. He stressed fairness, accuracy, objective analysis, and live reporting. The Associated Press (AP) is an American non-profit news agency headquartered in New York City. Founded in 1846, it operates as a cooperative, unincorporated association. It produces news reports that are distributed to its members, U.S. newspapers and broadcasters. The AP has earned 56 Pulitzer Prizes, including 34 for photography, since the award was established in 1917. It is also known for publishing the widely used '' AP Stylebook''. By 2016, news collected by the AP was published and republished by more than 1,300 newspapers and broadcasters, English, Spanish, and Arabic. The AP operates 248 news bureaus in 99 countries.
