Frau (band)
Frau is an all-female hardcore punk band from London, England. ''Billboard (magazine), Billboard magazine'' named them one of "20 All-Female Bands You Need To Know"; rock critic Maria Sherman compares their sound to Bikini Kill. The punkzine ''Maximumrocknroll'' describes the band's highly charged and frantic sound as equal to the flippant swagger of Teenage Jesus and the Jerks. Ashley Holland of the band, who also plays with Personnel and Good Throb, states that Frau seldom plays with other hardcore bands because the hardcore punk scene does not take female musicians seriously. In addition to Holland, the other members of the band are Colette Rosa who sings in all female punk band Woolf, Paula and Núria who also played in the Barcelona band Las Timidas. ''The Guardian'' is a British daily newspaper. It was founded in 1821 as ''The Manchester Guardian'', and changed its name in 1959. Women In Punk Rock
Women have made significant contributions to punk rock music and its subculture since its inception in the 1970s. In contrast to the rock music and heavy metal scenes of the 1970s, which were dominated by men, the anarchic, counter-cultural mindset of the punk scene in mid-and-late 1970s encouraged women to participate. This participation played a role in the historical development of punk music, especially in the US and UK at that time, and continues to influence and enable future generations. Women have participated in the punk scene as lead singers, instrumentalists, as all-female bands, zine contributors and fashion designers. Rock historian Helen Reddington wrote that the popular image of young punk women musicians as focused on the fashion aspects of the scene (Fishnet stockings, spiky hair, etc.) was stereotypical. ''Pitchfork'' (formerly ''Pitchfork Media'') is an American online music publication (currently owned by Condé Nast) that was launched in 1995 by writer Ryan Schreiber as an independent music blog. Schreiber started Pitchfork while working at a record store in suburban Minneapolis, and the website earned a reputation for its extensive coverage of indie rock music. It has since expanded and covers all kinds of music, including pop. Pitchfork was sold to Condé Nast in 2015, although Schreiber remained its editor-in-chief until he left the website in 2019. Good Throb was a feminist punk band from London that was active between 2010 and 2016. They consisted of KY Ellie (Ellie Roberts) on vocals, BB Thing (Bryony Beynon) on guitar, Ash Tray (Ashleigh Holland) on bass and L-Hard (Louis Harding) on drums. The band formed after having all met through the London punk scene. They started with the intention of everyone taking part doing something new to them, whether that was playing an instrument or being the vocalist. Beynon and Harding had previously played together in a band called The Sceptres where Beynon was vocalist and Harding was on bass. Hardcore punk (also known as simply hardcore) is a punk rock music genre and subculture that originated in the late 1970s. It is generally faster, harder, and more aggressive than other forms of punk rock. Its roots can be traced to earlier punk scenes in San Francisco and Punk rock in California, Southern California which arose as a reaction against the still predominant History of the hippie movement, hippie cultural climate of the time. Teenage Jesus And The Jerks
Teenage Jesus and the Jerks were an influential American no wave band, based in New York City, who formed part of the city's no wave movement. Background Lydia Lunch met saxophonist James Chance at CBGB and moved into his two-room apartment. She started to combine her poetry with acoustic guitar and was spurred to start a band after seeing one of Mars' earlier performances. Lunch found guitarist Reck at CBGB and recruited him as a drummer, later moving him to bass. They formed a band called the Scabs and briefly added Jody Harris to their line-up. Lunch knew Bradley Field through Miriam Linna and convinced him to join in early 1977. The band put together a ten-minute set of very short songs. It released only a handful of singles. ''Maximumrocknroll'', often written as ''Maximum Rocknroll'' and usually abbreviated as ''MRR'', is a not-for-profit monthly zine of punk subculture. Based in San Francisco, ''MRR'' focuses on punk rock and hardcore music, and primarily features artist interviews and music reviews. Op/ed columns and news roundups are regular features as well, including submissions from international contributors. By 1990, it "had become the de facto bible of the scene".
