François Pitot was a French naval officer. Battle Of Groix
The Battle of Groix was a large naval engagement which took place near the island of Groix off the Biscay coast of Brittany on 23 June 1795 ( 5 messidor an III) during the French Revolutionary Wars. The battle was fought between elements of the British Channel Fleet and the French Atlantic Fleet, which were cruising in the region on separate missions. The British fleet, commanded by Admiral Lord Bridport, was covering an invasion convoy carrying a French Royalist army to invade Quiberon, while the French under Vice-admiral Villaret de Joyeuse had sailed a week earlier to rescue a French convoy from attack by a British squadron. The French fleet had driven off the British squadron in a battle on 17 June known as Cornwallis's Retreat, and were attempting to return to their base at Brest when Bridport's force of 14 ships of the line appeared on 22 June. French Frigate Républicaine Française (1794)
The ''Républicaine française'' was a 32-gun frigate of the French Navy, of the ''Galathée'' class. The Royal Navy captured her in 1796. The Navy fitted her as a troopship in 1800, but both as a troopship, and earlier as a frigate, she captured several small Spanish and French privateers. She was broken up in 1810. French service Ordered in March 1793 as ''Panthère'', she became ''République française'' in January 1794, and eventually ''Républicaine française'' when commissioned in May, as the name had been attributed to the 120-gun ''République française''. Under Lieutenant François Pitot, she cruised the Atlantic off Brest. On 30 May 1795, she was again renamed to ''Renommée''. Onésime-Joachim Troude
Onésime-Joachim Troude (Brest, 31 January 1807 – Brest, 1886) was a French Navy officer and later naval historian. Career Born the fourth child of Amable Troude, Onésime-Joachim Troude had a career in the French Navy. He took part in the Invasion of Algiers in 1830 as an ensign on the ''Aventure'', under Lieutenant Quernel, and was aboard when she was wrecked on 14 May. He survived the ordeal of the 200 marooned sailors when they were captured by Kabyles and 108 were decapitated. He later rose to the rank of Capitaine de frégate. In 1854, he married Sophie Hamon; together, they had two daughters: Émeline in 1855 and Gabrielle in 1856. In 1867, he published a four-volume ''Batailles navales de la France'', mimicking William James' plan for his ''Naval history of Great Britain''. HMS Vengeance (1800)
HMS ''Vengeance'' was originally the 48-gun French Navy frigate ''Vengeance'' and lead ship of her class. She engaged during the Quasi-War, in an inconclusive engagement that left both ships heavily damaged. During the French Revolutionary Wars, hunted ''Vengeance'' down and captured her after a sharp action. She was recommissioned in the Royal Navy as the 38-gun fifth rate HMS ''Vengeance'', but the British apparently never returned her to seagoing service. Accounts are divided as to her eventual fate. She may have been broken up in 1803 after grounding in 1801, or continued as a prison ship until 1814. Construction ''Vengeance'' was one of two frigates built to Pierre Degay's design of 1793, initially ordered as ''Bonne Foi'', and launched on 8 November 1794. USS ''Constellation'' vs ''La Vengeance'', or the action of 1 February 1800, was a single-ship action fought between frigates of the French Navy and the United States Navy during the Quasi-War. In the battle the American frigate tried to take the French frigate ''La Vengeance'' as a prize. Both ships were heavily damaged. Although the French frigate struck her colors (surrendered) twice, she managed to flee only after the main mast of her opponent had fallen. In 1798, an undeclared war had begun between the United States and France due to French seizures of American merchantmen.
