François Ledrappier
François Ledrappier (born 17 January 1946) is a French mathematician. Ledrappier graduated from the École Polytechnique in 1967 and received his doctorate from Pierre and Marie Curie University (Paris 6) in 1975 under the supervision of Jacques Neveu. Ledrappier taught at Paris 6 and then became a professor at South Bend's University of Notre Dame, where he is now professor emeritus. His research deals with asymptotic properties of group actions and related problems. He has published articles on dynamical systems theory, compact negatively curved manifolds and their abelian covers, linear actions and random walks on linear groups, geometric measure theory, and zero entropy algebraic actions of free abelian groups. In 1994 Ledrappier was an invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Zurich. In 2016 he received the Sophie Germain Prize. Nalini Anantharaman (born 26 February 1976) is a French mathematician who has won major prizes including the Henri Poincaré Prize in 2012. Life Nalini Florence Anantharaman was born in Paris in 1976 to two mathematicians. Her father and her mother are Professors at the University of Orléans. She entered '' Ecole Normale Supérieure'' in 1994. She completed her PhD in Paris under the supervision of François Ledrappier in 2000 at Université Pierre et Marie Curie (Paris 6). She became a full Professor, at the University of Paris-Sud, Orsay in 2009 following time out at the University of California in Berkeley in the year before as a Visiting Miller professor. In mathematics, a free abelian group is an abelian group with a basis. Being an abelian group means that it is a set with an addition operation that is associative, commutative, and invertible. A basis, also called an integral basis, is a subset such that every element of the group can be uniquely expressed as an integer combination of finitely many basis elements. Geometric Measure Theory
In mathematics, geometric measure theory (GMT) is the study of geometric properties of sets (typically in Euclidean space) through measure theory. It allows mathematicians to extend tools from differential geometry to a much larger class of surfaces that are not necessarily smooth. History Geometric measure theory was born out of the desire to solve Plateau's problem (named after Joseph Plateau) which asks if for every smooth closed curve in \mathbb^3 there exists a surface of least area among all surfaces whose boundary equals the given curve. Such surfaces mimic soap films. The problem had remained open since it was posed in 1760 by Lagrange. It was solved independently in the 1930s by Jesse Douglas and Tibor Radó under certain topological restrictions.
