François Languedoc
François Languedoc (October 11, 1790 – September 23, 1840) was a seigneur, businessman and political figure in Lower Canada. He was born François de Borgias Languedoc in the town of Quebec in 1790, the son of a merchant. From 1812 to 1821, he was associated with John White and Company, which supplied goods for ships and sold and transported supplies for the army. They also operated, with other partners, a ferry service between Quebec and Pointe-Lévy and a steamboat service between Quebec and Montreal. In 1813, he married Anna Maria, the daughter of captain John Philipps. In 1816, Languedoc was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Lower Canada for the Lower Town of Quebec. In 1817, he purchased the seigneury of Saint-Georges. He was elected to represent L'Acadie in the assembly 1830. He did not support the Ninety-Two Resolutions. Seigneurial System Of New France
The manorial system of New France, known as the seigneurial system (french: Régime seigneurial), was the semi- feudal system of land tenure used in the North American French colonial empire. Both in nominal and legal terms, all French territorial claims in North America belonged to the French king. French monarchs did not impose feudal land tenure on New France, and the king's actual attachment to these lands was virtually non-existent. Instead, landlords were allotted land holdings known as manors and presided over the French colonial agricultural system in North America. Manorial land tenure was introduced to New France in 1628 by Cardinal Richelieu. Richelieu granted the newly formed Company of One Hundred Associates all lands between the Arctic Circle to the north, Florida to the south, Lake Superior in the west, and the Atlantic Ocean in the east. Lower Canada
The Province of Lower Canada (french: province du Bas-Canada) was a British colony on the lower Saint Lawrence River and the shores of the Gulf of Saint Lawrence (1791–1841). It covered the southern portion of the current Province of Quebec and the Labrador region of the current Province of Newfoundland and Labrador (until the Labrador region was transferred to Newfoundland in 1809). Lévis () is a city in eastern Quebec, Canada, located on the south shore of the St. Lawrence River, opposite Quebec City. Legislative Assembly Of Lower Canada
The Legislative Assembly of Lower Canada was the lower house of the bicameral structure of provincial government in Lower Canada until 1838. The legislative assembly was created by the Constitutional Act of 1791. The lower house consisted of elected legislative councilors who created bills to be passed up to the Legislative Council of Lower Canada, whose members were appointed by the governor general. Following the Lower Canada Rebellion, the lower house was dissolved on March 27, 1838, and Lower Canada was administered by an appointed Special Council. Ninety-Two Resolutions
The Ninety-Two Resolutions were drafted by Louis-Joseph Papineau and other members of the ''Parti patriote'' of Lower Canada in 1834. The resolutions were a long series of demands for political reforms in the British-governed colony. Papineau had been elected speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Lower Canada in 1815. His party constantly opposed the unelected colonial government, and in 1828 he helped draft an early form of the resolutions, essentially a list of grievances against the colonial administration. To ensure that the views of the Legislative Assembly be understood by the British House of Commons, the ''Parti patriote'' had sent its own delegation to London in order to submit a memoir and a petition signed by 78,000 people. Louis Roy Portelance (October 16, 1764 – March 2, 1838) was a businessman and political figure in Lower Canada. He was born at Pointe-Claire in 1764, the son of a farmer, and studied at the Collège Saint-Raphaël. He then entered the fur trade as a voyageur. In 1791, Portelance married his cousin Marie-Josephte, daughter of François Périnault and widow of silversmith Jacques Varin.
