François Haverschmidt (ornithologist)
François Haverschmidt (21 June 1906 – 28 April 1987) was a Dutch judge who served in Suriname who also took an interest in birds, writing a major work ''The Birds of Surinam'' (1968). Haverschmidt was born in Utrecht to François and Catharina Jacoba Johanna Verbroeck. His grandfather François Haverschmidt wrote under the pseudonym Piet Paaltjens. As a young boy he was part of a birdwatchers group along with his friend Jan Verwey (1899-1981). In 1924 he became a member of the and published his first article in the journal ''Ardea'' in 1925. Haverschmidt studied law in the University of Utrecht and worked as a clerk in the courts of Utrecht, Haarlem (1936-1938), Heerlen (1938-1941) and Leeuwarden (1941-1946) before moving to Paramaribo, Suriname as a judge. While serving in Suriname, he found that despite work done by the Penard brothers and Charles Chubb, there were great gaps in knowledge. Charles Chubb (ornithologist)
Charles Chubb (31 December 1851 – 25 June 1924) was a British ornithologist. Family Chubb was born in Steeple Langford near Salisbury, England. He married twice, to Ada Albion and Alice Mabel Baker. He had seven children, among them Ernest Charles Chubb who also became an ornithologist and was a museum curator in Durban. In 1924, Chubb was knocked down by a car outside the Natural History Museum, London, and died two weeks later in that city. Career Chubb began working at the British Museum at the age of 26. The Order of Orange-Nassau ( nl, Orde van Oranje-Nassau, links=no) is a civil and military Dutch order of chivalry founded on 4 April 1892 by the queen regent, Emma of the Netherlands. The order is a chivalric order open to "everyone who has performed acts of special merits for society.” These are people who deserve appreciation and recognition from society for the special way in which they have carried out their activities. The Order of the Netherlands Lion, also known as the Order of the Lion of the Netherlands ( nl, De Orde van de Nederlandse Leeuw, french: L'Ordre du Lion Néerlandais) is a Dutch order of chivalry founded by King William I of the Netherlands on 29 September 1815. Gerlof Mees
Gerlof Fokko Mees (16 June 1926 – 31 March 2013) was a Dutch ichthyologist, ornithologist and museum curator. During 1946 to 1949 he took part as a conscript in the military actions to reestablish rule in the Dutch East Indies. During that time he became interested in the avian family Zosteropidae, comprising the white-eyes. Mees was born at Bloemendaal in the Netherlands. He was introduced to natural history by his parents and was introduced to birds by his uncle Jan Verwey. He attended the University of Leiden where he studied biology, obtaining his doctorate in 1956 with a break in Java as part of the Dutch forces during the Indonesian war of independence. It was during his time in Java that he took a special interest in white-eyes (''Zosterops'') and also an introduction to George Junge. The Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie (National Museum of Natural History) was a museum on the Rapenburg in Leiden, the Netherlands. It was founded in 1820 by Royal Decree from a merger of several existing collections. This happened on the initiative of Coenraad Jacob Temminck, who saw the museum primarily as a research institute for the University of Leiden. The total collection was already quite large at the time, and continued to grow from foreign expeditions and by obtaining private collections from inheritances. The location is currently used by the ''Rijksmuseum van Oudheden''. History The location was originally a hofje called ''Hof van Zessen''. In 1815 plans were made to build a museum there (the first building called a "museum" in Leiden). It opened in 1820, and until 1913, the museum normally opened to the public on Sundays. The American Museum of Natural History (abbreviated as AMNH) is a natural history museum on the Upper West Side of Manhattan in New York City.
