François Devosge
François Devosge, François III Devosge or Claude François III (25 January 1732, Gray, Haute-Saône - 22 December 1811, Dijon) was a French portraitist and history painter. Among his students were François Rude, Pierre-Paul Prud'hon and Claude Hoin. He is best known for his work as the founder of the École de Dessin de Dijon. François Rude
François Rude (4 January 1784 – 3 November 1855) was a French sculptor, best known for the ''Departure of the Volunteers'', also known as ''La Marseillaise'' on the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. (1835–36). His work often expressed patriotic themes, as well as the transition from neo-classicism to romanticism. Early life François Rude was born 4 January 1784 on rue Petite-Poissonnerie (rue François Rude) in Dijon. His father was a blacksmith and locksmith, who taught Rude the trade of forging iron, so he could take over the family business. In 1799, at the age of fifteen, despite his father's resistance, he began taking courses at the School of Fine Arts in Dijon, located within the Palace of the Dukes of Burgundy, while continuing to work in the family business. His teacher was the deputy curator of the Dijon museum, Louis Fremiet. Rude learned both drawing and sculpture, using classical models. Pierre-Paul Prud'hon (, 4 April 1758 – 16 February 16, 1823) was a French Romantic Painting, painter and drawing, draughtsman best known for his allegorical paintings and portraits such as ''Madame Georges Anthony and Her Two Sons'' (1796). Anatole Devosge (13 January 1770 – 8 December 1850) was a French painter.Devosge, Anatole. ''Benezit Dictionary of Artists'' (Oxford University Press; 2011) Life Born in Dijon, he was the son of painter François Devosge and grandson of sculptor Claude François Devosge. He was one of the many artists trained in the studio of Jacques-Louis David. David's work ''Les derniers moments de Michel Lepeletier'' survives only in a sketch by Devosge. The sketch formed the basis of Tardieu's engraving, distributed by the government to all 84 departments of France as part of the propaganda campaign following the death of Lepeletier and Jean-Paul Marat. His own pupils included Sophie Fremiet. Many of Devosge's works are held by the Museum of Fine Arts in Dijon.
