François Désiré Breton (1 May 1781, Sainte-Rose, Guadeloupe - 15 April 1820, Les Cayes, Haiti) was a French naval officer. Career In 1800, aged 19, Breton departed Le Havre on ''Géographe'' as an ensign First Class to take part in Baudin expedition of 1800 to 1802 The Baudin expedition of 1800 to 1803 was a French expedition to map the coast of New Holland (now Australia). Nicolas Baudin was selected as leader in October 1800. The expedition started with two ships, '' Géographe'', captained by Baudin, and .... Les Cayes ( , ), often referred to as Aux Cayes (; ht, Okay), is a commune and seaport in the Les Cayes Arrondissement, in the Sud department of Haiti, with a population of 71,236. ''Géographe'' was a 20-gun ''Serpente''-class corvette of the French Navy. She was named ''Uranie'' in 1797, and renamed ''Galatée'' in 1799, still on her building site. Her builder refused to launch her, as he had not been paid to that time. Finally launched in June 1800, she was renamed ''Géographe'' on 23 August 1800. The Baudin expedition of 1800 to 1803 was a French expedition to map the coast of New Holland (now Australia). Nicolas Baudin was selected as leader in October 1800. ''Naturaliste'' was one of the two-vessel ''Salamandre''-class of ''galiotes à bombes'' of the French Navy. Under Jacques Hamelin, and together with '' Géographe'' she took part in the exploration of Australia of Nicolas Baudin. Design and early career She was constructed, and probably designed, by Pierre-Alexandre Forfait. Her plans are dated 14 January 1793. She was launched in 1795 as ''La Menaçante'', and completed as a gabarre. The navy transferred her towards the end of 1798 to Delamotte and Co. to serve as a privateer. In December, however, she was serving as a barracks for a detachment of naval artillerymen. A Sieur Longayron proposed, in December 1799, to charter her to carry some 200-250 colonists to Santo Domingo. Nicolas Thomas Baudin (; 17 February 1754 – 16 September 1803) was a French explorer, cartographer, naturalist and hydrographer, most notable for his explorations in Australia and the southern Pacific.
