François-Anatole Gruyer
François-Anatole Gruyer (15 October 1825, Paris - 27 October 1909, Chantilly) was a French art historian, and conservator at the Louvre. Biography He initially studied engineering at the École Centrale des Arts et Manufactures, then physics and chemistry at the École d'Agronomie de Versailles. During a trip to Italy, he developed a deep interest in art, and began devoting himself to the study of painting. After several more visits to Rome and Florence, he published works on Renaissance art, and would eventually become a recognized expert on Raphael. He began a career in art administration in 1871, and was promoted to Inspector General in 1872. Three years later, he was elected to the Académie des Beaux-Arts, where he took Seat #9 in the "Unattached" section. In 1881, he was named conservator of the at the Louvre, but resigned in 1886, following a serious disagreement with his superiors. Château De Chantilly
The Château de Chantilly () is a historic French château located in the town of Chantilly, Oise, about 50 kilometres (30 miles) north of Paris. The site comprises two attached buildings: the Petit Château built around 1560 for Anne de Montmorency and the Grand Château, which was destroyed during the French Revolution and rebuilt in the 1870s. It is owned by the Institut de France, which received it from Henri d'Orléans, Duke of Aumale. A historic monument since 1988, it is open to the public. The château's art gallery, the Musée Condé, houses one of the finest collections of paintings in France. It specialises in French paintings and book illuminations of the 15th and 16th centuries. Justin De Selves
Justin Germain Casimir de Selves (19 July 1848 in Toulouse – 12 January 1934 in Paris) was a French politician. He held an officer rank in the Franco-Prussian war. He was Director-General of Posts and Telegraphs from 1890 to 1896. He became a senator from Tarn-et-Garonne in 1909. He was Prefect of the Department of the Seine for fifteen years, giving up the post when he was appointed Foreign Minister, on 26 June 1911. He resigned the position on 9 January 1912 after refusing to confirm to President Clemenceau statements made by Premier Caillaux. Musée Condé
The Musée Condé – in English, the Condé Museum – is a French museum located inside the Château de Chantilly in Chantilly, Oise, 40 km north of Paris. In 1897, Henri d'Orléans, Duke of Aumale, son of Louis Philippe I, bequeathed the château and its collections to the Institut de France. It included rooms remodeled as museum spaces and those left as residential quarters in the styles of the 18th and 19th centuries. Collections The collection of old master paintings is among the most important in France. It consists predominantly of Italian and French works and includes three paintings by Fra Angelico, three by Raphael, five by Nicolas Poussin, four by Antoine Watteau and five signed by Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres. Honoré Daumet
Pierre Jérôme Honoré Daumet (23 October 1826, Paris – 12 December 1911, Paris) was a French architect. Biography Daumet was the winner of the Prix de Rome in 1855, and in 1861 conducted a treasure-hunting expedition to Macedonia at the request of Napoleon III, accompanying the archaeologist Léon Heuzey. On his return he married the daughter of architect Charles-Auguste Questel. Daumet founded his own atelier which would produce nine further Grand Prix winners, Charles-Louis Girault chief among them, and attracted a number of foreign students such as Charles Follen McKim, Charles McKim and Austin W. Lord. In 1908 Daumet won the Royal Gold Medal of the Royal Institute of British Architects.
