Franz Samohyl
Franz Samohyl (3 April 1912 – 14 June 1999) was an Austrian violinist, concertmaster of the Vienna State Opera and academic teacher. Life Born in Vienna, Samohyl began his musical education in 1929 at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna with and continued these studies from 1931 after passing the Reifeprüfung. He attended master classes for chamber music with Franz Mairecker from 1933 to 1935 and followed private studies with Ernst Morawec and Arnold Rosé. In 1930, he founded the Vienna Philharmonia Quartet, with which he travelled abroad to England, Hungary, Italy and Germany. Samohyl was concertmaster of the Vienna Chamber Orchestra from 1932 and of the orchestra of the Vienna Volksoper from 1934. From 1936, he was first violinist of the Vienna Philharmonic and the Vienna State Opera Orchestra, serving as its concertmaster in 1947. Concertmaster
The concertmaster (from the German ''Konzertmeister''), first chair (U.S.) or leader (U.K.) is the principal first violin player in an orchestra (or clarinet in a concert band). After the conductor, the concertmaster is the second-most significant leader in an orchestra, symphonic band or other musical ensemble. Orchestra In an orchestra, the concertmaster is the leader of the first violin section. There is another violin section, the second violins, led by the principal second violin. Any violin solo in an orchestral work is played by the concertmaster (except in the case of a concerto, in which case a guest soloist usually plays). It is usually required that the concertmaster be the most skilled musician in the section, experienced at learning music quickly, counting rests accurately and leading the rest of the string section by their playing and bow gestures. Gerhard Schulz (musician)
Gerhard Schulz (born 23 September 1951) is an Austrian violinist, conductor and academic. Life Born in Linz, Schulz was born as the fourth child of a family of musicians and studied with Franz Samohyl at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, Sándor Végh at the Robert Schumann Hochschule Düsseldorf and Shmuel Ashkenasi in the USA. He was involved in the founding of the Salzburg String Trio and the Schulz Ensemble and was first violinist of the Düsseldorf String Quartet. Since 1980 Schulz has been Professor of Violin at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna and since 1993 he has also been Visiting scholar for chamber music at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln. The is a Japanese order, established on 4 January 1888 by Emperor Meiji as the Order of Meiji. Originally awarded in eight classes (from 8th to 1st, in ascending order of importance), since 2003 it has been awarded in six classes, the lowest two medals being abolished that year. Originally a male-only decoration, the order has been made available to women since 1919. The Order of the Sacred Treasure, which had 8 ranks until 2003, was awarded as a slightly lower rank than the Order of the Rising Sun for men and the Order of the Precious Crown for women.
