Frans Diale Kgomo
Frans Diale Kgomo (born 17 September 1947) is a South African retired judge who was the Judge President of the Northern Cape High Court between November 2001 and September 2017. He joined the bench in November 1998 as the first black judge of that court. Before that, he was a lawyer in the North West Province, working as a magistrate from 1974 to 1986 and then as an advocate from 1986 to 1998. Early life and education Kgomo was born on 17 September 1947 in Brits in present-day North West Province. He attended Maruatona Primary School in nearby Wonderkop and matriculated in 1968 at the Bafokeng High School in Rustenburg. Thereafter he studied law at the University of Zululand, where he completed a Diploma Iuris in 1973 and a Diploma Legum in 1977, and at the University of Bophuthatswana, where he completed a Bachelor of Laws in 1985. The Northern Cape Division of the High Court of South Africa (formerly named the Northern Cape High Court and the Northern Cape Provincial Division, and commonly known as the Kimberley High Court) is a superior court of law with general jurisdiction over the Northern Cape province of South Africa. The division sits at Kimberley. History A Supreme Court was created for the British colony of Griqualand West by proclamation in 1871. The Cape Colony annexed Griqualand West according to the Griqualand West Annexation Act on 27 July 1877, with the date for annexation set for 18 October 1880. According to this act, the court was subordinated to the Cape Supreme Court and became known as the High Court of Griqualand West. On the creation of the Union of South Africa it became the Griqualand West Local Division of the Supreme Court of South Africa and remained subordinate to the Cape Provincial Division. Nare Frans Kgomo
Nare Frans Kgomo is a South African judge of the High Court of South Africa. He currently serves in the Limpopo Division of the High Court, but he joined the bench on 1 May 2008 as a judge of the Gauteng Division, following his shortlisting for that position in February 2008. Sitting in the Johannesburg High Court in 2010, Kgomo heard the Brett Kebble murder trial and dismissed the murder charges against Glenn Agliotti. In April 2015, ahead of the appointment of the new Limpopo Division, Kgomo was one of seven candidates whom the Judicial Service Commission shortlisted and interviewed for possible appointment as inaugural Judge President of the new division. He was not recommended for the post, which instead went to Ephraim Makgoba, under whom Kgomo had worked as a young attorney.
