Frans Baert
Frans Baert (25 November 1925 – 15 July 2022) was Belgian-Flemish lawyer and politician. He was a member of the Volksunie party, before joining the Sociaal-Liberale Partij. Life and career Baert was born in Grembergen on 25 November 1925. He died on 15 July 2022, at the age of 96. Volksunie
People's Union ( nl, Volksunie, VU) was a Flemish nationalist political party in Belgium, formed in 1954 as a successor to the Christian Flemish People's Union. The Volksunie defined itself as a big tent and catch-all party that combined support from the left and right with the main goal of focusing on increased Flemish autonomy and establishing more linguistic and political rights for the Flemish community. The party also based its platform on civic nationalism over radicalism in order to foster a more legitimate image. It also contained members sympathetic to federalism and full separatism, with its stance on whether to secede Flanders from Belgium or redefine Belgium as a federal nation in which Flanders had devolved power changing with its leadership. Sociaal-Liberale Partij
Sociaal-Liberale Partij (; SLP; Dutch language, Dutch for Social Liberal Party) was a Belgium, Belgian Flanders, Flemish political party formed after dissolution of the moderate nationalist People's Union (Belgium), People's Union (''Volksunie'') party. Prior to 19 April 2008 it was known as Spirit, and intermediately as Flemish Progressives (VlaamsProgressieven). The party merged with Groen (political party), Groen in the end of 2009, ceasing to exist. History The People's Union split up into two parties, the social liberalism, social liberal Spirit and the centre-right New-Flemish Alliance (N-VA), which formed an electoral alliance with the Christian Democratic and Flemish (CD&V) party. Grembergen
Grembergen (French: ''Grembergen-lez-Termonde'') is a town in the municipality of Dendermonde in the Denderstreek in the province of East Flanders in Belgium. It is often confused with the municipality of Grimbergen in the province of Flemish Brabant. Overview Grembergen was first mentioned in 1019 as Grendberga. During the 13th and 14th century, the village was reasonably prosperous as a centre of lace production. The village was flooded several times. The old church was destroyed in 1706 by French troops. In 1709, the Saint Margaretha church was built partially from scavenged material of the old church. Flemish Independence
The Flemish Movement ( nl, Vlaamse Beweging) is an umbrella term which encompasses various political groups in the Belgium, Belgian region of Flanders and, less commonly, in French Flanders. Ideologically, it encompasses groups which have sought to promote Flemish culture and Dutch language as well as those who have sought greater political autonomy for Flanders within Belgium. It also encompasses territorial nationalism, nationalists who have sought the secession of Flanders from Belgium, either through outright independence or unification with the Netherlands.
