Frankenthaler
Helen Frankenthaler (December 12, 1928 – December 27, 2011) was an American abstract expressionist painter. She was a major contributor to the history of postwar American painting. Having exhibited her work for over six decades (early 1950s until 2011), she spanned several generations of abstract painters while continuing to produce vital and ever-changing new work. Frankenthaler began exhibiting her large-scale abstract expressionist paintings in contemporary museums and galleries in the early 1950s. She was included in the 1964 ''Post-Painterly Abstraction'' exhibition curated by Clement Greenberg that introduced a newer generation of abstract painting that came to be known as color field. Born in Manhattan, she was influenced by Greenberg, Hans Hofmann, and Jackson Pollock's paintings. Mountains And Sea
''Mountains and Sea'' is a 1952 painting by American abstract expressionist painter Helen Frankenthaler. Painted when Frankenthaler was 23 years old, it was her first professionally exhibited work. Though initially panned by critics, ''Mountains and Sea'' later became her most influential and best known canvas. Background In 1950, Frankenthaler was exposed to the work of Jackson Pollock for the first time during an exhibition at the Betty Parsons Gallery where several of Pollock's paintings, ''Autumn Rhythm, Number 30, 1950'' (1950), and ''Number One,1950 (Lavender Mist)'' (1950), were displayed. She was intrigued by the idea of painting a canvas lying flat on the floor, and would later employ that technique for ''Mountains and Sea''. Robert Motherwell
Robert Motherwell (January 24, 1915 – July 16, 1991) was an American Abstract Expressionism, abstract expressionist Painting, painter, printmaker, and editor of ''The Dada Painters and Poets: an Anthology''. He was one of the youngest of the New York School (art), New York School, which also included Willem de Kooning, Jackson Pollock, and Mark Rothko. Gloria Ross
Gloria F. Ross (1923–1998) was an American designer who was born and died in New York City. She was well known as a tapestry artist who worked in close collaboration with painters and weavers to create contemporary wall hangings. Ross's work is held in the Minneapolis Institute of Art. Early life and education Ross was the second daughter of Alfred Frankenthaler (1881–1940), a New York Supreme Court Justice, and Martha Lowenstein Frankenthaler (1895–1954). Her sister was the abstract painter Helen Frankenthaler (1928–2011). In 1943 Ross graduated from Mount Holyoke College. Ross married Arthur Ross (1910–2007) in 1946 and had three children: Alfred (1946), Beverly (1948), and Clifford (1952). Bennington College is a private liberal arts college in Bennington, Vermont. Founded in 1932 as a women's college, it became co-educational in 1969. Clifford Ross (born October 15, 1952) is an American artist who has worked in multiple forms of media, including sculpture, painting, photography and video. His work is in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the J. Paul Getty Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
