Frank O'Neill (footballer, Born 1940)
Frank O'Neill (born 13 April 1940) is an Irish former footballer who spent most of his career at Shamrock Rovers. As an international he also played for the Republic of Ireland. Playing career Early years O'Neill joined Stella Maris at the age of twelve before moving onto Home Farm. He also played for an FAI Youth Selection against a Liverpool County FA XI at Goodison Park, and in 1958 he played against the youth teams of some of the leading European clubs in a tournament in Germany. Arsenal O'Neill signed for Arsenal as an eighteen-year-old, initially as an amateur but subsequently turned professional in April 1959. He spent the next two seasons playing for Arsenal Reserves, making just 2 appearances in the English League. On both occasions, during the 1960–61 season, he deputised for the injured Danny Clapton. Paddy Mulligan
Patrick Martin Mulligan (born 17 March 1945) is an Irish retired footballer who played mainly as a right-back. Playing career Mulligan started his senior career playing for Bohemians in 1963. However, after only two games he signed for Shamrock Rovers in December 1963. He made his competitive debut in a 7–1 win over Bohemians on 26 January 1964 and scored his first goal for the Hoops on 23 August 1964 in a 4–0 League of Ireland Shield win over his old club. He won the FAI Cup in 1965, 1966, 1967 and 1969. During the 1963–64 season he was part of the side which won seven trophies. He represented Rovers in European competition 10 times. In the summer of 1967 he was part of the Rovers team that represented Boston in the United Soccer Association league. Mick Leech
Mick Leech (born 6 August 1948) is an Irish former professional football player who made his name with Shamrock Rovers in the 1960s. He was signed by Paddy Ambrose and Liam Tuohy for Rovers in September 1966 from junior side Ormeau. He spent 6 weeks in the reserves before he made his first team debut against Dundalk at Milltown on New Year's Day 1967. Rovers drew 1–1 and Mick was substituted by Billy Dixon in the second half. Leech scored his first goal for the Hoops on 4 January 1967. He played his first FAI Cup tie for Rovers in the semi-final against Dundalk and scored Rovers' goal as they drew 1–1. The Hoops made no mistake in the replay as Mick scored twice in a 3–0 win. Bobby Gilbert
Bobby Gilbert is an Irish former footballer who played for, among others, Derry City and Shamrock Rovers. Gilbert scored in European competitions for both City and Rovers. Pat Dunne
Patrick Dunne (9 February 1943 – 25 September 2015) was an Irish professional football goalkeeper. He played internationally for the Republic of Ireland and professionally in both Republic of Ireland and England. Career Dunne played in Dublin with Stella Maris before playing in England for Everton. He returned to Ireland to play with the Shamrock Rovers, making his debut, along with Jackie Mooney against Shelbourne at Dalymount Park on 22 August 1962. He played in the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup that season and the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup the following season against Valencia giving him a total of 4 European appearances. During this season Pat played in all 22 league games where Rovers only lost once winning every trophy except the Top Four Cup. Johnny Fullam
John Rowan Fullam (22 March 1940 – 10 June 2015) was an Irish association footballer. Career Born in Dublin, Fullam began his career at Home Farm before signing for Preston North End in 1958. He scored 6 goals in 49 league appearances for Preston. In 1961 he was asked to guest on Shamrock Rovers tour of America on the understanding that he would sign for the club. He scored his first goal in a competitive match from the penalty spot against Transport in a League of Ireland Shield game on 20 August 1961. He suffered a serious knee injury in February 1962 and missed Rovers FAI Cup win that season. He made his European debut in the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup against PFC Botev Plovdiv and won his first Shield medal in 1962/63. Liam Tuohy (footballer)
Liam Tuohy (27 April 1933 – 13 August 2016) was an Irish footballer and manager. During the 1950s and 1960s, Tuohy played as an outside left for Shamrock Rovers, Newcastle United, and the Republic of Ireland. In 1959, while playing for Ireland, Tuohy scored the first ever goal in the history of the European Championship. After retiring as a player, Tuohy became a coach and managed several clubs in the League of Ireland including Shamrock Rovers, Dundalk, and Shelbourne. He also managed the Republic of Ireland. In July 1973, he also took charge of the Shamrock Rovers XI that played Brazil in a prestige friendly, and during the 1980s, he successfully coached the Republic of Ireland U-19s. He subsequently served as a director of football at Home Farm, before retiring in 2002. The Football Association of Ireland Senior Challenge Cup (FAI Cup), known as the Sports Direct FAI Cup for sponsorship reasons, is a knock-out association football competition contested annually by teams from the Republic of Ireland (as well as Derry City F.C., Derry City from Northern Ireland). League Of Ireland Shield
The League of Ireland Shield is a defunct Irish football tournament which was introduced when the League of Ireland started in 1921 and ran uninterrupted until 1972. It was played before the league season began and was seen as the third most important trophy in Irish football, after the league and FAI Cup. The winners of the Shield gained entry to the following season's Inter-Cities Fairs Cup until 1971–72. It was played in a variety of formats; from complete round robin series to group stages followed by knock out games to complete knock out tournaments. It was replaced by the League of Ireland Cup in 1973, though returned for one season in 1983–84.
