Frank Houghton (rear Admiral)
Rear-Admiral Frank Llewellyn Houghton, CBE, (1897, Cornwall – 3 August 1981, Ottawa) was a flag officer in the Royal Canadian Navy. Born in Cornwall, England, and educated in Victoria, British Columbia and Halifax, Nova Scotia, Houghton joined the navy in 1913 as an officer cadet. In 1945 Houghton, by then a captain, was appointed to replace Percy W. Nelles as chief of the Canadian navy's mission to Britain. In 1946 Houghton took command of Canada's first aircraft carrier, ''Warrior'', and by 1947 he was serving as vice-chief of the Naval Staff. Rear-Admiral
Rear admiral is a senior naval flag officer rank, equivalent to a major general and air vice marshal and above that of a commodore and captain, but below that of a vice admiral. It is regarded as a two star "admiral" rank. It is often regarded as a two-star rank with a NATO code of OF-7. The term originated in the days of naval sailing squadrons and can trace its origins to the Royal Navy. Each naval squadron was assigned an admiral as its head, who commanded from the centre vessel and directed the squadron's activities. The admiral would in turn be assisted by a vice admiral, who commanded the lead ships that bore the brunt of a battle. In the rear of the squadron, a third admiral commanded the remaining ships and, as this section was considered to be in the least danger, the admiral in command of it was typically the most junior. HMS Warrior (R31)
HMS ''Warrior'' was a light aircraft carrier which was ordered in 1942 by the British Royal Navy during World War II. Construction was finished in 1945 and upon completion, the aircraft carrier was loaned to the Royal Canadian Navy from 1946 to 1948 as HMCS ''Warrior''. ''Warrior'' was returned to the Royal Navy in 1948 and entered service with the British. While in service with the Royal Navy, ''Warrior'' was modernised twice, including the installation of an angled flight deck in 1956. In 1948–1949, the ship was used in aircraft landing experiments and fitted with a rubber flight deck and in 1957, was used as the headquarters ship during nuclear testing at Christmas Island. In 1958, the vessel was sold to the Argentine Navy and entered Argentine service in 1959 as ARA ''Independencia''. International Grenfell Association
The International Grenfell Association (IGA) is an organization founded by Sir Wilfred Grenfell to provide health care, education, religious services, and rehabilitation and other social activities to the fisherman and coastal communities in northern Newfoundland and the coast of Labrador. Before 1892 there were no medical facilities or personnel along the coast of Labrador aside from a Moravian Mission that provided basic medical care and an occasional doctor that the Newfoundland government sent on a mail ship. Grenfell undertook a medical expedition in 1892 on the hospital ship the ''Albert''. He saw medical and living conditions that appalled him, including settlements that had been wiped out by diphtheria. In response, he developed a network of regional hospitals and nursing stations.
