Frank George Carpenter
Frank George Carpenter (May 8, 1855 in Mansfield, Ohio – June 18, 1924 in Nanking) was a journalist, traveler, travel writer, photographer, and lecturer. Carpenter was a writer of geography textbooks and lecturer on geography, and wrote a series of books called ''Carpenter's World Travels''. His writings helped popularize cultural anthropology and geography. Biography Early life Carpenter was born in Mansfield, Ohio, son of George F. and Jennette L. Carpenter. He graduated with a bachelor's degree from University of Wooster in 1877. He began working as a journalist for the ''Cleveland Leader'' in 1879, and in 1882 he moved to Washington DC as the correspondent there. He married Joanna D. Condict of Mansfield in 1883. In 1884 he became a correspondent for the American Press Association. In 1887 he worked for the New York ''World''. Mansfield (Ohio)
Mansfield is a city in and the county seat of Richland County, Ohio, United States. Located midway between Columbus and Cleveland via Interstate 71, it is part of Northeast Ohio region in the western foothills of the Allegheny Plateau. The city lies approximately southwest of Cleveland, southwest of Akron and northeast of Columbus. The city was founded in 1808 on a fork of the Mohican River in a hilly region surrounded by fertile farmlands, and became a manufacturing center owing to its location with numerous railroad lines. After the decline of heavy manufacturing, the city's economy has since diversified into a service economy, including retailing, education, and healthcare sectors. The American Press Association is a self-regulated non-governmental news press organization that is considered the oldest news press agency in the United States. History In 1882, the American Press Association was founded in Chicago by Maj. Orlando J. Smith, a Civil War veteran and American philosopher and former editor of the ''Terre Haute Mail'', the owner and editor of the ''Terre Haute Express'' which he moved to Chicago in 1878 and renamed the ''Chicago Express''. Shortly after its founding, the Association relocated to New York City, with offices at 32 Vesey Street. In 1891, Smith began syndicating humorist Edgar Wilson Nye's work, leading him to become the "most widely read and highly paid writer in the United States" at the time of Nye's death in 1896.
