Frank Gainer
Francis Leo "Frank" "Pop" Gainer (February 12, 1888 – March 10, 1975) was a politician from Alberta, Canada. He served in the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1955 to 1967 as a member of a coalition of the Progressive Conservative and Liberal parties. Political career Gainer first ran for a seat to the Alberta Legislature in the 1955 general election. He defeated Social Credit incumbent Lee Leavitt in the riding of Banff-Cochrane. In the 1959 general election he defeated Social Credit candidate Robin Echlin in a straight fight by just 71 votes. Due to Gainer's Coalition label, it was thought that he would be chosen leader of the official opposition after the 1959 election. There were only four members of the opposition elected to the Legislature, each elected under a different banner. Arthur, Ontario
Arthur (population 2,450) is a community located just north of Highway 6 and Wellington Road 109 in the township of Wellington North, Ontario, Canada. Formerly an independent village, Arthur was amalgamated into Wellington North on January 1, 1999. History The village was named after Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington. Settlers began arriving in 1840. The area was first surveyed in 1841 by John McDonald and then officially in 1846 by D.B. Papineau. During the first survey in 1841, the population of Arthur was 22 people. Over the next 15 years this number rose to 400 and by 1900 the population had risen to just over 1500. The saw and grist mills on the Conestogo River encouraged people to settle here. In 1851, a post office, church and school were organized. Development increased in 1872 when the train line of the Toronto, Grey and Bruce Railway reached the village which was incorporated in that year. Lee Leavitt
Lorne Lee Leavitt (December 6, 1906 – January 13, 1984) was a teacher and a provincial level politician from Alberta, Canada. He served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1952 to 1955 and a second stint from 1963 to 1971 sitting both times with the governing Social Credit caucus. Political career Leavitt would run for a seat in the 1952 Alberta general election. He ran as a Social Credit candidate in the electoral district of Banff-Cochrane. Leavitt easily won the district defeating two other candidates, including Independent Social Credit incumbent Arthur Wray. Leavitt ran for a second term in the 1955 Alberta general election. Clarence Copithorne
Clarence Copithorne (November 12, 1920 – June 4, 1979) was a provincial level politician from Alberta, Canada. He served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1967 to 1975 sitting as an Independent and later with the Progressive Conservative caucus in both opposition and government. During his time in office he served as a cabinet minister in the government of Peter Lougheed from 1971 to 1975. Political career Copithorne ran for a seat to the Alberta Legislature in the 1967 Alberta general election. Banff-Cochrane
Banff-Cochrane was a provincial electoral district in Alberta, Canada, mandated to return a single member to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1940 to 1975, and again from 1979 to 2019. The Banff-Cochrane electoral district is home to the town of Banff and the popular tourist destination Banff National Park, environmental issues tend to dominate here. The cost of living is significantly high especially in Canmore where there is a struggle to fill low wage service sector jobs, due to the high cost of living. Bears and wildlife encounters are also common in this riding, requiring extra attention to waste disposal. The Legislative Assembly of Alberta is the deliberative assembly of the province of Alberta, Canada. It sits in the Alberta Legislature Building in Edmonton. 1955 Alberta General Election
The 1955 Alberta general election was held on June 29, 1955, to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta. Despite losing almost 10% of the popular vote (compared to its 1952 proportion of the vote) and 30% of its seats in the legislature, the Social Credit Party, led by Ernest C. Manning, received a slightly higher number of votes than in 1952 and won a comfortable majority for its sixth term in government. The Liberal Party emerged as the principal opposition to the Social Credit juggernaut, winning over 30% of the popular vote, and increasing its legislative caucus from 4 members to 15. Ernest Watkins
Ernest Shilston Watkins (June 18, 1902 – 1982) was a provincial politician and author from Alberta, Canada. He served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1957 to 1963. Political career Watkins was elected in a by-election held in the Calgary provincial electoral district October 2, 1957. He won nearly half the popular vote, defeating four other candidates. Michael Maccagno
Michael Maccagno (July 15, 1914 – November 25, 2000) was a politician from Alberta, Canada. He served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1955 to 1968, and leader of the Alberta Liberal Party from 1964 to 1968. Political career Mr. Maccagno ran for a seat to the Alberta legislature in the 1955 provincial election as a candidate for the Alberta Liberals in the electoral district of Lac La Biche. He defeated incumbent Social Credit MLA Harry Lobay by less than 100 votes. When he was re-elected in 1959, he was the only Liberal with a seat in the legislature. 1963 Alberta General Election
The 1963 Alberta general election was held on June 17, 1963, to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta. The Social Credit Party, led by Ernest C. Manning, won its eighth consecutive term in government, winning roughly the same number of seats in the legislature and share of popular vote that it had in the 1959 election. Some Social Credit supporters were so confident of their party's chances that they talked of winning "63 in '63", i.e., all 63 seats in the legislature in the 1963 election. They fell short of this goal, but still had an overwhelming majority, reducing the opposition to only three MLAs in total. Indeed, as a share of the overall seats available, this represented Social Credit's greatest victory in its 36-year reign.
