Frank Dunham, Jr.
Frank W. Dunham Jr. ( – November 3, 2006, in Alexandria, Virginia) was a federal public defender who represented a number of high profile defendants, including Zacarias Moussaoui, the only person charged and convicted after the September 11, 2001 attacks. Education and early career Dunham was a graduate of Virginia Tech and the Columbus School of Law at The Catholic University of America. He had been a federal prosecutor and defense lawyer in Northern Virginia before becoming the federal public defender for the Eastern District of Virginia in 2001. Legal Dunham was instrumental in the federal government's release of Yaser Esam Hamdi. By the time Moussaoui went to trial in early 2006, Dunham was too ill to participate in the case. Brain Cancer
A brain tumor (sometimes referred to as brain cancer) occurs when a group of cells within the brain turn cancerous and grow out of control, creating a mass. There are two main types of tumors: malignant (cancerous) tumors and benign (non-cancerous) tumors. These can be further classified as primary tumors, which start within the brain, and secondary tumors, which most commonly have spread from tumors located outside the brain, known as brain metastasis tumors. All types of brain tumors may produce symptoms that vary depending on the size of the tumor and the part of the brain that is involved. Where symptoms exist, they may include headaches, seizures, problems with vision, vomiting and mental changes. Yaser Esam Hamdi
Yaser Esam Hamdi (; born September 26, 1980) is a former American citizen who was captured in Afghanistan in 2001. The United States government claims that he was fighting with the Taliban against U.S. and Afghan Northern Alliance forces. He was declared an " illegal enemy combatant" by the Bush administration and detained for almost three years without charge. On October 9, 2004, on the condition that he renounce his U.S. citizenship and commit to travel prohibitions and other conditions, the government released him and deported him to Saudi Arabia, where he had been raised. Hamdi was initially detained at Camp X-Ray at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, along with eventually hundreds of other detainees. After officials learned that he was a U.S. citizen, Hamdi was transferred to military jails in Virginia and South Carolina. He continued to be detained without trial or legal representation. Zacarias Moussaoui (, '; born 30 May 1968) is a French member of al-Qaeda who pleaded guilty in a U.S. federal court to conspiring to kill citizens of the United States as part of the 9/11 attacks. He is serving life imprisonment without the possibility of parole at the Federal ADX Supermax prison in Florence, Colorado. Moussaoui is the only person ever convicted in a U.S. court in connection with the September 11 attacks.
