Frank Drown
Frank Drown (September 30, 1922 - January 22, 2018) was an American author and former missionary. He and his wife Marie were missionaries with Avant Ministries, Gospel Missionary Union and worked for 37 years with the Jivaroan peoples, Jívaro Indians of eastern Ecuador, who were known for their head shrinking. The Drowns were asked to write a book about their lives as missionaries. After the success of Elisabeth Elliot's best-seller ''Through Gates of Splendor'', the publishers believed such a book would be in demand. And so the Drowns co-authored a book which became their memoirs, titled ''Mission to the Headhunters'', followed by ''Unmarked Memories: Five friends buried in the jungle of Ecuador''. Avant Ministries
Avant Ministries (formerly known as Gospel Missionary Union) is a non-profit, Christian mission agency focused on planting and developing churches worldwide. Headquartered in Kansas City, Missouri, and Winnipeg, Manitoba, Avant missionaries serve in church planting and church support ministries in Africa, Asia, Europe and North and South America. Jivaroan Peoples
The Jivaroan peoples are the indigenous peoples in the headwaters of the Marañon River and its tributaries, in northern Peru and eastern Ecuador. The tribes speak the Chicham languages. Their traditional way of life relies on gardening, and on hunting with blowguns and darts poisoned with curare. Complex spiritual beliefs are built around both of these activities. Jivaroan culture also features headhunting raids and ayahuasca ceremonies. In the 16th century, Jivaroan warriors stopped the expansion of the Inca Empire into the Amazon basin, and destroyed settlements of Spanish conquistadors. Etymology The word ''Jivaro'' is likely a corruption of xivar, a word that means ''people'' in the Shuar Chicham language. Head Shrinking
A shrunken head is a severed and specially prepared human head that is used for trophy, ritual, or trade purposes. Headhunting has occurred in many regions of the world, but the practice of headshrinking has only been documented in the northwestern region of the Amazon rainforest. Jivaroan peoples, which includes the Shuar, Achuar, Huambisa and Aguaruna tribes from Ecuador and Peru, are known to keep shrunken human heads. Shuar people call a shrunken head a ''tsantsa'', also transliterated ''tzantza''. Many tribe leaders would display their heads to scare enemies. Shrunken heads are known for their mandibular prognathism, facial distortion and shrinkage of the lateral sides of the forehead; these are artifacts of the shrinking process. Through Gates Of Splendor
''Through Gates of Splendor'' is a 1957 best selling book written by Elisabeth Elliot. The book tells the story of Operation Auca, an attempt by five American missionaries – Jim Elliot (the author's husband), Pete Flemming, Ed McCully, Nate Saint, and Roger Youderian – to reach the Huaorani tribe of eastern Ecuador. All five of the men were killed by the tribe. The book is Elliot's first book, and arguably her most well-known work. The title of the book is derived from the fourth stanza of the hymn " We Rest on Thee". This hymn was famously sung by the missionaries before the men left for Waodaoni territory in September 1955. ''Beyond the Gates of Splendor'' (also ''Beyond the Gates'') is a documentary film that was released in 2004. It chronicles the events leading up to and following Operation Auca, an attempt to contact the Huaorani tribe of Ecuador in which five American missionaries were killed.
