Frank Dolan
Francis Owen Dolan (2 April 1915 – 12 July 1988) was an Australian motorcycle speedway rider. He was champion of Australia in 1946 and earned eight international caps for the Australia national speedway team. Biography Dolan, born in Sydney, was noticed by the England captain Jack Parker riding in Australia in early 1938. He persuaded Dolan and fellow Australian Ray Duggan to travel with him to the United Kingdom. He began his British leagues career riding for Harringay Tigers during the 1938 Speedway National League season but was then loaned out to Southampton Saints and Lea Bridge Cubs. In 1939, he rode for Harringay but then lost six years of his career due to World War II. Harringay Tigers (speedway)
The Harringay Tigers were a motorcycle speedway team who raced at the Harringay Stadium from 1934 until 1939 in the National League Division One. History The Tigers were the second of three speedway teams to be based at Harringay. From 1929 to 1931 the team were called the Harringay Canaries. The Tigers finished runner-up in the 1935 Speedway National League. Racing ceased in 1939 because of World War II, the Tigers were in 5th position at the time. Harringay Tigers Riders
Harringay (pronounced ) is a district of north London, England, within the London Borough of Haringey. It is centred on the section of Green Lanes running between the New River, where it crosses Green Lanes by Finsbury Park, and Duckett's Common, near Turnpike Lane. Location The boundaries of Harringay form a rough boot shape in the extreme southern centre of the borough of Haringey. The western boundary of Harringay is formed by the East Coast Main Line. The northern boundary is to the south of Turnpike Lane, running parallel to it, somewhere between Sydney Road and Fairfax Road. In the northeast, the boundary roughly corresponds with a line drawn between the south of Duckett's Common and the north end of Warwick Gardens. The 1938 National League Division One was the tenth season of the highest tier of motorcycle speedway in Great Britain. Summary The only change from the previous season was Bristol Bulldogs moving up from the Provincial League and Hackney Wick Wolves moving down to take their place. They also swapped licences and riders as well as divisions. New Cross Rangers won their first national title. Lea Bridge Cubs
Lea Bridge also known as Clapton Saints were a British speedway team that existed from 1928 to 1938. They raced at the Lea Bridge Stadium. Brief history They first competed in the Southern League in 1929 and were based at Lea Bridge Stadium, Walthamstow, London When they entered the National League in 1932, they took over the fixtures from Southampton, halfway through the National Association Trophy and taking the name of Clapton Saints. In 1934, the team reverted to the name Lea Bridge but once again were unable to fulfill their fixtures, which were completed by Walthamstow Wolves. The team re-appeared during the 1938 Speedway National League Division Two, under the name of Lea Bridge Cubs, which would be their last season in existence. The British Newspaper Archive web site provides access to searchable digitized archives of British and Irish newspapers. It was launched in November 2011. History The British Library Newspapers section was based in Colindale in north London, until 2013, and is now divided between the St Pancras and Boston Spa sites. The library has an almost complete collection of British and Irish newspapers since 1840. This is partly because of the legal deposit legislation of 1869, which required newspapers to supply a copy of each edition of a newspaper to the library. London editions of national daily and Sunday newspapers are complete back to 1801. In total, the collection consists of 660,000 bound volumes and 370,000 reels of microfilm containing tens of millions of newspapers with 52,000 titles on 45 km of shelves. Ray Duggan
Raymond Patrick Duggan (22 December 1918 – 20 January 1950) was an Australian motorcycle speedway rider. He first rode in the United Kingdom with the New Cross Lambs. Duggan represented the Australia many times at test level and was the younger brother of five times Australian champion Vic Duggan. Career Duggan was noticed by the England captain Jack Parker riding in Australia in early 1938. He persuaded Duggan and fellow Australian Frank Dolan to travel with him to the United Kingdom. He started his career in 1938 with the New Cross Rangers. In 1947, he returned to the UK with the Harringay Racers. Ray Duggan never became Australian National Champion with his best finish being third on three occasions in 1947, 1948 and 1949. The 1947 event was behind his brother Vic Duggan and Lionel Van Praag, the inaugural World Champion.
